Questions concerning application for enrolment as international student


Bachelor- / Master-degree program

Applicants for Bachelor-/ Master-degree programs apply via "uni-assist".

The language of tuition of all Bachelor-degree programs at TU Chemnitz is German. The following Master-degree programs are English-speaking:

  • Master Advanced Functional Materials
  • Master Anglistik/Amerikanistik
  • Master Automotive Software Engineering
  • Master Embedded Systems
  • Master Information and Communication Systems
  • Master Micro and Nano Systems
  • Master Print and Media Technology
  • Master Web Engineering

The following groups of applicants have to apply via uni-assist:

  • Applicants without German qualification for admission to higher education („Abitur“) who apply for an undergraduate degree program and who intend to acquire their degree in Germany
  • Applicants for a Master degree program holding a first university degree acquired abroad

The following groups of applicants may apply directly at the university via the Online-Portal:

  • Applicants for enrolment with German nationality and qualification for admission to higher educa-tion acquired abroad or with university degree acquired abroad
  • Applicants for enrolment with German qualification for admission to higher education ("Abitur")
  • Applicants for enrolment with certificate of German Preparatory College ("Studienkolleg")
  • Applicants for enrolment with German Bachelor-, Diploma- or Master-degree (German and interna-tional students holding a German degree)
  • Applicants for enrolment within exchange programs (exchange students) (Applicants are asked to use the application form of the International Office)
  • Applicants for enrolment as PhD (please do not apply via the Online-Portal but via the respective ap-plication form of the Student Service)

International applicants for enrolment in a degree program with German as language of tuition have to prove German language proficiency. The following documents are recognized as proofs:

  • Certificate of German Language Proficiency Test for University Entrance – DSH-1, DSH-2, DSH-3
  • Certificate of TestDaF – level 3 at all 4 submodules at minimum
  • Central Advanced Language Test of a Goethe-Institute – ZOP
  • Minor German Language Diploma of a Goethe-Institute – KDS
  • Major German Language Diploma of a Goethe-Institute – GDS
  • German Language Diploma, level II of the Standing Conference of Education Ministers – DSD II
  • Certificate of a successfully completed Assessment Test (“Feststellungsprüfung”) at a German Pre-paratory College (“Studienkolleg”) – FSP
  • Goethe-Institute B2 or C1 according to Common European Reference Framework for Languages.

In the case, that the necessary proof of German language proficiency is not available, applicants for enrol-ment, who are able to submit a proof of at least 600 hours of German language training (level B1 according to Common European Reference Framework for Languages), may participate in a German Language Prepar-atory Course (2 terms at maximum) to qualify for the German Language Proficiency Test for University En-trance (DSH). In this case, the applicant has to apply for acceptance for this German language training course within her/his application for enrolment. Applicants for enrolment without proof of sufficient German language proficiency are not accepted for the German language training. In the case that the proof of suc-cessful participation in a German language training course is currently not available, the applicant is asked to submit a written confirmation of participation proving that (s)he takes part in the German language training course. The certificate of German language proficiency may also be submitted to Technische Universität Chemnitz later.

International applicants for enrolment in an English-speaking degree program whose national language (offi-cial language) is not English have to prove English language proficiency. The following documents are rec-ognized as proofs:

  • IELTS from 5.0 on
  • TOEFL internet based: 87 points at minimum
  • TOEFL paper based: 500 points at minimum
  • TOEFL computer based: 173 points at minimum
  • Cambridge: from First Certificate in English on
  • TOEIC 785 – 944 points
  • Certificate of successfully completed degree program with English as language of tuition
  • Degree program of English as a language (English and American Studies)
  • Interpreter/translator

International applicants for enrolment in an English-speaking degree program have to prove German lan-guage proficiency of level A2 according to Common European Reference Framework for Languages.
Applicants who are able to prove German language proficiency of level A1 have to prove German language proficiency of level A2 at the end of the third term at latest.
International applicants for enrolment without German language proficiency fulfilling the other conditions for acceptance for enrolment, may be enrolled under the condition that they acquire the required German lan-guage proficiency within German language courses before the beginning of studies. This regulation applies to the following English-speaking degree programs:

  • Master English and American Studies
  • Master Micro and Nano Systems
  • Master Information and Communication Systems
  • Master Embedded Systems
  • Master Print and Media Technology

The master degree program Automotive Software Engineering includes German language training. For this reason, in this case the provisions for the acquirement of German language proficiency up to the minimum level of A2 of the regulations of studies of this degree program apply.
