Research, knowledge acquisition and reflection – Showcase at the WOT PhD Seminar 2026
The annual PhD seminar took place over three days, from 22 to 25 June 2026, at the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering (WOT). A total of 17 PhD students, including eleven internal and six external candidates, presented the progress of their research or, in some cases, outlined their doctoral research proposals for the first time. The breadth of the Chair’s research was reflected in the diversity of the dissertation topics.

Field trip to Aalberts Surface Technologies GmbH in Zwönitz and ANDRITZ AWEBA Werkzeugbau GmbH in Aue
On 3 July 2026, the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering (WOT) organised this year’s field trip to innovative companies in the region whose processes and products are relevant to the WOT programme. This annual event aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industrial practice by providing authentic insights into work processes, corporate cultures, market demands and specific career prospects.

3 July 2026 International Activities of the Chair

The WOT Chair welcomes visiting researchers from AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków as part of an ERASMUS+ partnership
As part of the ERASMUS+ cooperation between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Faculty of Metallurgy and Industrial Informatics at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, three researchers were guests at the WOT Chair from 29 June to 3 July 2026. The visit served to strengthen academic collaboration and facilitate an exchange on current research and teaching activities.

12 June 2026 Events of the Professorship

WOT at conferences on electrochemical process engineering and metal deposition at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland
From 10 to 12 June 2026, two colleagues from the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering (WOT) attended the European Symposium on Electrochemical Engineering (ESEE) and the Pulse Plating Seminar organised by the European Academy of Surface Technology (EAST), where they gained interesting insights and received valuable feedback.

9 June 2026 Projects of the professorship

Climate neutrality in thermal processing plants and the influence of different gas atmospheres on steel materials
The internal kick-off meeting on 5 June 2026 marked the official launch of the IGF-FOGI research project ‘Holistic Analysis of Microwave Plasma Torches in High-Temperature Processes – A Process Engineering and Materials Science Approach (GAMi-Pro)’. The project is being carried out in close cooperation between the Chair of Gas and Thermal Engineering at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, led by Prof. Krause, and the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology.

Innovative protection strategies for wind turbine rotor blade surfaces
With the launch of the collaborative project ‘BladeProtect³ – Development of a multifunctional system for the protection of rotor blades’ at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen on 28 May 2026, joint research work will commence on the development of innovative solutions for protecting rotor blade surfaces under demanding operating conditions. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and managed by Projektträger Jülich at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

22 May 2026 Projects of the professorship

Launch of a joint research project on innovative and sustainable compressor technology
The Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering is conducting research in collaboration with Thyssenkrupp Dynamic Components Chemnitz GmbH, Metallgießerei Chemnitz GmbH and BMF Bernstein Mechanische Fertigung GmbH into innovative lightweight materials for thermodynamically optimised electric refrigerant compressors. The collaborative project was secured through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

WOT presents the latest research findings on the PEO treatment of thermal spray coatings
The announcement for the 47th Ulm Symposium – the event organised by the German Society for Electroplating and Surface Technology (DGO) that provides in-depth scientific insights into the sector – already sets out the high standards expected of the presentations and speakers: This year’s Ulm Symposium aims to provide impetus on how efficient technology transfer can be achieved in practice. Innovative coating systems from the field of research, particularly from the area of ‘combined surface technology’, will be presented. The event was held under the theme ‘Surface Technology and High-End Applications’.

8 May 2026 Personnel of the professorship

A researcher from the WOT Chair has received an award for the best presentation
From 6 to 8 May 2026, Dzień Hutnika (Metallurgists’ Day) took place at the Faculty of Metallurgy and Industrial Informatics at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. Lukas Böttger, a research assistant at the WOT Chair, received the award for the best scientific presentation there.

24 April 2026 Events of the Professorship

WOT represented at the “Junior-WAW” meeting
On 20 and 21 April 2026, the junior members of the Scientific Working Group of University Professors of Materials Engineering (WAW) met at the University of Siegen at the Chair of Materials Science and Testing. The WOT Chair was, of course, represented.
