IWW takes on an animal sponsorship
From the start of 2022, the IWW professorships will be sponsoring an animal at Chemnitz Zoo. The initiative came from our most recent PhD students, who suggested a sustainable use of internal gift collections. As a result, our sponsored animal is now – and hopefully for a long time to come – a steppe fox.

An honour – WOT graduate receives the 2021 Eleonore Dießner Prize from Chemnitz University of Technology
Chemnitz University of Technology has honoured nine early-career female researchers for their outstanding final theses. Alina Joanna Meyer, who completed her Master’s thesis on ‘The influence of plasma electrolytic polishing on medical products based on nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys’ at the WOT Chair, is among the deserving recipients of the award.

Transdisciplinary Dialogue “People, Technology and AI”
The 2nd Transdisciplinary Dialogue on ‘People, Technology and AI’ took place on 15 November 2021. Two short presentations by Dr Rudolf Seising (Deutsches Museum, Munich) and Dr Uwe Haas (Roboconsult, Munich) provided the impetus for the subsequent discussion among the approximately 80 participants. The transdisciplinary dialogue is organised and hosted by the Chair of General Psychology I and Human Factors in collaboration with the Chair of WOT.

WOT employee receives university award for doctoral thesis
At the end of 2021, Dr Pierre Landgraf was awarded one of nine university prizes for his doctoral thesis; these prizes are awarded annually by Chemnitz University of Technology and the Society of Friends of Chemnitz University of Technology e. V. for the best final theses at the university.

On 11 November 2021, the third IWW Colloquium took place, held entirely online due to the current situation. The audience, comprising students, staff and former colleagues from the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IWW), were delighted by the warm welcome and the interesting and engaging specialist presentations.

Award-winning – Bachelor’s thesis honoured with the DGO Young Researchers’ Award
For 30 years, the German Society for Electroplating and Surface Technology has been recognising outstanding work in the field of surface technology. This was also the case in 2021, albeit without the usual ceremonial setting. This year, Luisa Schottstedt, a student of Medical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology, has been awarded the DGO Young Talent Prize for her bachelor’s thesis, completed at the WOT Chair, on electroplated iron base layers in medical technology.

NFG HEA-SurfProtect at EUROMAT 2021
The European Congress and Exhibition on Advanced Materials and Processes (EUROMAT) took place virtually for the first time this year. From 13–17 September 2021, 1,500 scientists from 46 countries met online to share their latest findings in materials science. Right at the heart of it all was the NFG HEA-SurfProtect.

Successful participation in a hybrid conference: The WOT Chair at the ZVO Surface Days 2021
Following a one-and-a-half-year hiatus, the annual congress of the ZVO (Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik e.V.) was once again held as a hybrid event from 22 to 24 September 2021. Over 350 participants attended in person and virtually, learning about technological developments, trends and innovations in electroplating and surface technology through the 48 specialist presentations and at the stands of the 42 exhibitors. As Germany’s largest event in the field of electroplating and surface technology, the congress was held for the first time as a combination of online and in-person sessions.
