LaTeX for Students

LaTeX is a professional typesetting system used for lab reports, theses, academic papers, or presentations. Unlike WYSIWYG editors (MS Word), LaTeX ensures consistent formatting, clean formulas, and stress-free reference and citation management.

1. Setup & Editors

2. Overleaf & Pool Computers

  • Pool computers: TeX Live pre-installed, simply launch TeXstudio or TeXworks
  • Overleaf Server: overleaf.hrz.tu-chemnitz.de – SSO, full package library, CI templates, and archiving

3. Templates & Corporate Design

4. Bibliography & References (BibLaTeX etc.)

  1. Create a literature.bib file with sources (e.g., @book, @article)
  2. In your preamble: \usepackage[…]{biblatex} and \addbibresource{literature.bib}
  3. Cite in your text: \cite{key}
  4. Output your bibliography: \printbibliography

More on this topic in our blog post: From research to bibliography in LaTeX (March 11, 2025)

5. Tools & Tips

  • Zotero & JabRef: Free alternatives to Citavi, available on university PCs
  • Cheat Sheets: BibLaTeX cheatsheet (CTAN), LaTeX command overviews
  • Workshops & LaNdaH: Yearly “Long Night of Procrastinated Papers” with help desks & mini talks
  • Community: Ask questions at TeX StackExchange or our mailing list
