Chemnitz can be reached quite conveniently by aeroplane, thanks to its proximity to the international airports Leipzig-Halle and Dresden which are about 80 km away, as well as by train and by car via the freeways A4 (Frankfurt/ Main-Görlitz) or A72 (Hof-Leipzig). The public transport system in Chemnitz is very well developed so that it is possible to move in the city day and night.

By aeroplane, Chemnitz can be reached quite conveniently thanks to its proximity to the international airports Leipzig-Halle and Dresden which are about 80 km away. If you are travelling from a country far away, it is recommendable to fly via the airports Frankfurt/ Main, Munich or Berlin because from there are starting frequent domestic connection flights to Dresden or Leipzig. From both airports you can then take the train to Chemnitz Main Station. This station is situated right in the city center so that you can easily get to your final destination at Chemnitz by using the very well developed public transport system of the city (see below). Alternatively, you could also rent a car at both airports and travel conveniently via the freeways A4 (from Dresden) resp. the A72 (from Leipzig) to Chemnitz.

Chemnitz disposes of a very well developed public transport system which enables you to move conveniently and rapidly within the city as well as in its surrounding. In the city of Chemnitz, buses also go at night. In the case that you are an enrolled PhD-student, you can use the whole public transport system in Chemnitz and surrounding for free with your semester ticket. If you are belonging to another group, there is a great variety of tariffs for tickets you can choose from whereas your should select that one which corresponds the best to your habits of use of public transport. You find an overview of the different tickets, tariffs and prices on the websites of the Chemnitzer-Verkehrs AG (CVAG) and the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS) as well.

You can buy all tickets for the use of the public transport system in Chemnitz and surrounding at the CVAG Mobility Center. It is situated right in the city center (Rathausstraße 7) and is accordingly very well accessable (Central Stop Station). Alternatively, you find ticket vending machines at many stops in the city where you can also buy the most of the tickets.

In case you would like to travel from abroad to Germany with your own car, you need not only your driving license and vehicle registration document but you should also be in possess of an international green car insurance card as well as of a proof of absence of damage of your proper car insurance company
