On 27 March 2018, Dr Ruben Winkler defended his dissertation entitled „Adhesion mechanisms of metals (Cu, Al) applied by wire arc spraying on polymer surfaces (PEEK)“.
Using high-resolution analysis methods, Dr Winkler systematically developed indications of both physical and chemical bonding components between arc-sprayed copper-based coatings and thermoplastic substrate materials. These can be maximised through optimal process control and thus make a significant contribution to the adhesion of thermally sprayed metal coatings to plastics, as they supplement the mechanical bonding typical of thermally sprayed coatings. In some cases, the adhesive tensile strength of the coatings exceeded the material strength of the thermoplastic base materials.
