Dealing with Visa issues

Some of you might experience some difficulties in getting a Visa/Visa appointment at the proper time. If your arrival is delayed, you can get started with online learning: OPAL Portal .

The enrolment for the first semester is possible online, but for re-enrolment to the 2nd semester you have to be in Chemnitz in person and present yourself to the student secretary with your original application documents for double-check.

City Registration and Residence Permit

When arriving to Chemnitz for the first time as a student, you should register your apartment or place of residence with the city within 14 days of your arrival. The documents you should bring with you are listed very clearly in your admission letter, so please inform yourself through this document. Since the city registration office is always busy, you should make an appointment before you arrive in Chemnitz through the Stadt Chemnitz website . There are also possibilities to go without an appointment, but this option involves long waiting times. The city registration process must be done every time you move into a new residence inside or outside the city you currently live in, without fail.

All non-EU students need a residence permit (RP) to stay in Germany for their studies. Since it takes more than a month to issue an RP, you should apply for it before your visa or current RP expires. It is usually granted for one year and must be renewed in a timely manner. The application form containing the list of requirements for a first-time RP as well as for an RP extension for students is available online. Since you also need to show financial proof every time you apply for an RP, you need to plan ahead to avoid any unexpected issues or stress.
