Hans-Dieter Steffens

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology awarded Professor Dr.-Ing. habil. Hans-Dieter Steffens, Head of the Chair of Materials Technology at the University of Dortmund, an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements and high level of expertise in the fields of joining and surface technology in science and research.
Mr Hans-Dieter Steffens was born in Magdeburg in 1931. After completing his Abitur in Magdeburg, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover, graduating with a degree in engineering. His academic career then took him, via a PhD and habilitation at the Technical University of Hanover in 1969, to the directorship of the FhG Institute for Applied Materials Research (IFAM) in Bremen. In 1975, he took over as Head of the Chair of Materials Technology at the Technical University of Dortmund, specialising in joining and coating technology as well as materials engineering.
Even before German reunification, and particularly afterwards, Professor Steffens was committed to academic collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology and personally championed its membership of SFB 316, based at the University of Dortmund, ensuring it received funding for projects. Professor Steffens demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to Chemnitz University of Technology and was an early advocate of research into coating and welding technologies as well as materials science.
In recognition of Professor Steffens’s scientific achievements in materials technology, particularly in the fields of welding and coating technology, his highly effective work as a promoter and initiator of collaborative research in welding and coating technology, and his globally recognised standing as an engineer, Chemnitz University of Technology honoured him in 1996 by awarding him an honorary doctorate.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology awarded Professor Dr (PhD in Chemistry) Dr (DSc in Physics) Lech Pawlowski, Head of the Institute of Science and Ceramic and Surface Treatment Processes, Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Limoges, France, an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements and high level of expertise in the fields of plasma and surface technology in science and research.
Mr Lech Pawlowski was born in Wrocław, Poland, in 1952. After completing his A-levels in Wrocław, he studied electrical engineering at the Wrocław University of Technology, graduating with a degree in engineering and a Master’s in Electronics, and went on to obtain a PhD in chemistry there in 1978.
During his various stays as a visiting researcher at the universities of Limoges in France and Stuttgart, he completed a further doctoral thesis in 1985 at the Université de Limoges (Laboratoire de Thermodynamique) in France, earning a DSc in Physics. In 1985, he took up a post as a development engineer at Haldenwanger in Berlin. Further international research and development work followed from 1988 to 1993 at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and at the University of Trento in Italy (as an invited professor), in the field of surface engineering.
In 1995, Mr Pawlowski was appointed to the University of Artois, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Béthune, in France, and in 1999 he moved to the neighbouring university as a professor at the Lille School of Chemical Engineering. In 2010, he took up the Chair of ‘Surface Engineering’ at the Université de Limoges (Faculté des Sciences et Techniques) in France.
At the same time, close academic collaboration with Poland – in particular with the Wrocław University of Technology – and with the University of Limoges in France and Chemnitz University of Technology was always a priority for him, which served to strengthen academic ties between the three institutions and countries.
As part of his academic work, Professor Pawlowski has authored a series of textbooks on thermal spraying. His books have since become standard works on thermal spraying technology worldwide. He was able to present his latest textbook in 2018 at the 20th WTK in Chemnitz (picture available!).
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to teaching and research in materials engineering, particularly in the field of coating technology, as well as his support for Chemnitz University of Technology, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2013.

On 6 November 2024, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr.-Ing. Klaus Nassenstein, managing partner of GTV Verschleißschutz GmbH, as well as GTV Thermal Spray Beijing in China and GTV Automotive GmbH, an honorary doctorate for his outstanding achievements in science and research, as well as in technology transfer in the field of thermal coating technology.
Klaus Nassenstein was born on 2 May 1964 in Solingen, studied mechanical engineering in Dortmund and spent five years as a research assistant at the Chair of Materials Technology at the University of Dortmund, where he was awarded his doctorate in 1997. He has held various positions at GTV Verschleißschutz GmbH since 1 June 1996.
In addition to his role as managing director and shareholder of GTV, Dr Nassenstein has held voluntary positions and offices in research and standardisation at both national and international level for over 30 years; he is a member of the Executive Board of the Thermic Spraying Association e. V. (GTS) and, until 12 April 2024, served as President of the ‘Otto von Guericke’ Association of Industrial Research Organisations (AiF). Over the past 25 years, he has played a key role in developing GTV’s research activities. These activities culminated, for the time being, in the research centre, which was inaugurated in 2018 and expanded in 2025; in addition to all key thermal spraying processes, the centre is equipped with several laser coating cells as well as various facilities for analysis and diagnostics.
The award of an honorary doctorate to Klaus Nassenstein recognises his outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions to science and technology – particularly in the field of innovative wear protection through thermal spraying and laser cladding – as well as his close collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology.
