Chemnitz scientists are researching novel surface treatments for high-entropy alloys


Scientists led by Dr Thomas Lindner have been working on the material class of high-entropy alloys (HEA) for several years. Their latest publication on „Surface hardening of FCC phase high-entropy alloy system by powder-pack boriding” in the journal Surface and Coatings Technology is one of the most downloaded articles in this journal.

With this award, the working group is once again setting an example for the outstanding and innovative research work at the Chair of Materials and Surface Technology WOT under the direction of Professor Thomas Lampke.

Modifying the surface of HEA by boronising significantly increases the hardness and wear resistance of the investigated single-phase HEAs. The accumulation of boron in the edge zone forms a silicon-boron double layer with strength-enhancing precipitates. The understanding gained of the material behaviour of thermomechanically treated HEAs should open up new areas of application for this class of materials under tribological stress.

Together with other scientists from the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the ESF junior research group „HEA-SurfProtect“ has been successfully funded, thereby stabilising research activities on the topic of „high-entropy alloys as coating materials for surface protection applications“ under the leadership of the WOT professorship. The funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the state of Saxony covers the period from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022.
