International doctoral project successfully completed
Between April 2021 and October 2022, Dr Mehri Hashemzadeh worked on large parts of her practical results on her doctoral topic at the WOT professorship. Her doctorate on the topic of „Ti incorporation in PEO coatings applied on Al7075 and evaluation of its effects on microstructure and properties of the coatings” has now been awarded by the supervising university, Isfahan University of Technology, Isfahan/Iran, with an excellent evaluation. Dr Hashemzadeh is now starting his career in Germany.
Dr Hashemzadeh's work on „Ti incorporation in PEO coatings applied on Al7075 and evaluation of its effects on microstructure and properties of the coatings” made a major contribution to the further utilisation of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). PEO is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process for surface conversion in order to provide light metals, in particular aluminium and its alloys, with an electrolytically generated ceramic protective layer. The surface hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance are significantly improved compared to the untreated material. By applying a high voltage, spark discharges occur on the treated surface in the electrolytic process during PEO and lead to various electrochemical and plasma-chemical reactions. The PEO processing parameters, including the electrical parameters such as the type and magnitude of the applied current density, frequency, duty cycle and also the electrolyte composition, have a complex influence on the properties of the PEO coating. Dr Hashemzadeh has investigated these systematically and in detail. Her latest publication on the subject can be found at https://www.mdpi.com/2079-6412/12/1/33/pdf . Further publications together with WOT are currently being prepared.
