Bodies of Music – Composition and Scientific Understanding of Sound Production

How does a musical instrument sound, and what is the origin of the sound of a particular musical instrument? A composer is the expert for the first question, a physicist may answer the second. There are different mechanisms at work in the reed of a hautboy, a plugged (guitar), struck (piano), or stringed (violin) instrument. A great way to analyze the difference is by modifying instruments, as done by modern composers as way to generate unfamiliar sound in an analog manner. Hessam Sadeghi, a Composer resident in Leipzig, will perform in a world premiere a composition on October 24th; Ulrich Schwarz, professor of physics, explain the physics at action in the modified instruments.
