Barbecue evening in a relaxed atmosphere facilitated exchange across subject and national borders

Funded researchers within the Philipp Schwartz Initiative and the Visiting Scholar Program of Chemnitz University of Technology seized the opportunity for discussion and networking

As part of a get-to-know and networking meeting on September 19, 2023, at the Club of Cultures on the Reichenhainer Straße campus of Chemnitz University of Technology, about ten guest researchers met with professors and other representatives of Chemnitz University of Technology. Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs at Chemnitz University of Technology, opened the meeting in a relaxed and late summer atmosphere, with Dr. Benny Liebold, head of the International Office at Chemnitz University of Technology also attending. This format of informal and unconstrained exchange across national, cultural, and subject borders stems from an initiative of Chemnitz University of Technology‘s university management. The invitation was extended by the Iinternational Office.

The international researchers in attendance included those sponsored by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and those who were guests under the Visiting Scholar Program (VSP) of Chemnitz University of Technology.

Most of the guests arrived together with their hosting professors. Among them were Prof. Dr. Klaus Mößner, head of the Professorship of Communications Engineering, Prof. Dr. Tino Ullrich, head of the Professorship of Applied Analysis, Prof. Dr. Marco Ragni, head of the Professorship of Predictive Analysis, and Prof. Dr. Ullrich Theodor Schwarz, head of the Professorship of Experimental Sensor Science at Chemnitz University of Technology.

"Very grateful for this opportunity"

Prof. Dr. Vita Ivanova, whose guest stay at the professorship of Prof. Schwarz is supported by the VSP, was enthusiastic about the format: "I recently arrived from Ukraine with my daughter and am very grateful for this opportunity to make contacts with other guest researchers. Everything is still new to me - but thanks to the help of many colleagues at the professorship, especially Prof. Schwarz, and the administration of Chemnitz University of Technology, I had a very good start. The Visiting Scholar Program has also contributed significantly to this."

"I feel very comfortable in Chemnitz"

Dr. Isamil Özdemir, sponsored by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, added: "Thanks to the support, I have been able to research and work in safety and independently of my home country for a year now. I am very grateful for this opportunity for support and the exchange with German researchers and feel very comfortable in Chemnitz."

Prof. Dr. Sebastian Gechert, head of the Professorship of Macroeconomics at Chemnitz University of Technology, also showed interest in the funding programs of the IUZ: "The evening provided me with extensive information on funding opportunities for international researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology. This has given me additional perspectives on expanding cooperation with research partners."

Background: Visiting Scholar Program and Philipp Schwartz Initiative

With the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, universities and research institutions in Germany have the opportunity to accommodate at-risk researchers as part of a fellowship. Currently, four researchers are part of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative at Chemnitz University of Technology. More information: www.tu-chemnitz.de/international/vernetzung/psi/index.php

The Visiting Scholar Program of Chemnitz University of Technology supports research partnerships that are established and can look back on joint successes. The program is aimed at tandems from Chemnitz professorships and international guests who have already worked together, for example in projects or publications. Visiting scholars can research at Chemnitz University of Technology for a duration of three to six months. Currently, eight researchers are funded by the VSP at Chemnitz University of Technology.
