Frequently Asked Questions

Attention

This site is still under construction. We do our best answering these questions but we cannot guarantee that that it is the right answer. Sometimes there is no right answer.

Please be aware that most of the referred websites are provided in German only. If there is an English version known to us, we've linked the English version of course.

Which committees and institutions at this university may be important for me?

The president's office

Fun Fact: Magnifizenz = title of the President (academic) in German

The dean's office

Fun Fact: Spektabilität = title of a dean in German

The student council is the authored representation of the students, works within university committees, takes charge of the ticket for public transport (Semesterticket) and the Student Culture Ticket, administers the semester fee, supports student initiatives and organises events.

The University Computer Centre runs numerous computer pools in all parts of the campus, offers many services and provides many advanced training courses regularly. (all referred pages are in German)

The URZ also has a FAQ.

At the ZPA you can enrol for exams and withdraw from exams, and also ask for help with questions regarding examination procedures.

Many faculties have one distinct examination board for (almost) each course of studies, but in Computers Science we only have one for all courses.

For each course of studies there we have a responsible Dean of Studies.

The FRIZ is a structural unit of the Faculty of Computer Science. Besides other tasks it runs few computer pools, where you can do computer science specific tasks. The rooms 1/B201 and 1/B202 are the main computer rooms. Here can print and scan your documents too.

Life on the Campus

The TUC-Card combines many different functions.

  • payment method for the canteen and PaperCut (the URZ print service)
  • user card for the University Library
  • access card for the computer rooms (both URZ and FRIZ)

In case you're member of the student body (what you are, when you do not explicitly withdraw from this)

Organisation of studies

You have the possibility to print from your PaperCut-accout on numerous multifunctional printers, which you can find all over the campus. Additional information on that can also be found on the FRIZ website.

As a student at the Faculty of Computer Science you are also allowed to scan for free and print up to 500 pages for free after the submission of paper.

Especially in the "StraNa" (= university site "Straße der Nationen") the numbering might be confusing and some rooms are difficult to find. Here it might be helpful to have a look at the campus map or search your room directly in the room directory [de].
Sometimes you can also search for rooms on the touch-screens which you can find in the corridors, but it seems to be unavailable sometimes.

First of all you can have a look at the archive of the course catalogue, whether the course was offered in the last semester. If this is the case and according to your study regulation the module is offered once per year, it is probably offered in the next semester.

Otherwise you can contact the person responsible for the timetable. Sometimes also the Dean of Studies can help you too. Of course you can ask us too, maybe someone knows someone of the responsible professorship or even has the same problem. :)

For the creation of your timetable it might be helpful to have a look into your study regulations. Then you might be enabled to plan your timetable with the course catalogue.

If all of this does not help you, you might want to have a look onto the presentation slides from the orientation week or ask your fellow students.

Hints and Tricks

If you aim for a good final grade, it's recommendable to focus more onto exams with a higher weight. The weight of the modules you can find in the examination regulation of your course of studies, whereas the weight of individual assignments can be found in the according study regulation. Examination prerequisites usually have no effect on you average grade, so they only must be passed (graded with 4.0).
Another good reference is your feeling during the semester and a look at possible former exams.
Of course you should pay more attention to exams, which you take in your second or third attempt! Trying to continue studying this course of studies after you've failed in the third attempt is usually very time-consuming and exhausting, thus not always successful and not recommendable.
