All about the promotion

Dear (future) PhD students,

We are pleased about your interest in pursuing a doctorate at Chemnitz University of Technology.

A doctorate is both an academic and an organisational challenge. On this page, we would like to help you find your way at the beginning of your doctorate and support you with important administrative steps.

The Center for Junior Researchers is here for you as a university-wide advisory and qualification institution. We provide prospective doctoral candidates and doctoral researchers with information and advice on general aspects of the doctoral phase. In addition, we offer an interdisciplinary programme of free training courses specifically tailored to early-career researchers, providing support and additional qualification opportunities.

For an initial overview of a typical doctoral trajectory, you can consult the diagram. We have also compiled further information on funding opportunities for doctoral studies in a separate document.

Supervision Agreement

An important part of doctoral studies is the supervision agreement for doctoral candidates. It sets out the basis of the cooperation between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor and clarifies rights, responsibilities and expectations throughout the doctoral process.

With the update of the supervision agreement in 2026 (see Rundschreiben des Rektors 05/2026), the requirements of the Saxon Higher Education Act were implemented. The aim is to further strengthen the quality of doctoral supervision, increase transparency and reliability for all parties involved, and define the key framework conditions of the doctoral project at an early stage.

Enrolment in Doctoral Studies

At the beginning of the doctorate, or once admission to doctoral studies has been granted, doctoral candidates should also enrol in doctoral studies. This was expressly pointed out in Rundschreiben des Rektors 35/2024.

Enrolment also formally documents membership of the university and is associated with various benefits, such as access to university facilities and other services.

Faculties and Further Contacts

We would also like to draw your attention to the websites of the eight faculties and the Centre for Teacher Education and Educational Research at Chemnitz University of Technology. There you will find information on the doctoral committee, the relevant doctoral regulations, and further contact persons in the faculties or the central institution:
