Language requirements

Proof of German proficiency

International Applicants from non-German-speaking countries or regions must provide a German language proof at minimum level A1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - CEFR) at the time of application. By no later than the end of their third study term at TU Chemnitz, they have to submit a German language proof at level A2 according to CEFR. 

Language certificates for German language proof at level A1 are only accepted from the Goethe-Institut, telc examination centres or ÖSD.

German language attendance certificates will not be accepted.

If you do not submit an A1 certificate by the application deadline, you can only receive a conditional letter of admission, which requires you to attend an A1 language course before the the end of September. You have to send the certificate by e-mail to and they will issue you with an unconditional letter of admission. If you cannot submit an A1 certificate by the end of September you will not get a letter of admission.

Proof of English proficiency

For the program applicants must provide evidence of English language skills. Applicants from countries with English as official / educational or native language are not required to submit a proof of English language proficiency within their application.

Those who have a German "Abitur" and had English as a subject in the 11th and 12th and possibly 13th grade have the required B2 level.

English language proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) must be proven by one of the following language certificates:

  • IELTS 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test): 72 points
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1: 543 points
  • Cambridge Preliminary English Test + Result Distinction (PET)
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English: Grade B or C (FCE)
  • Cambridge English: Business Vantage (BEC Vantage), Legal (ILEC), Financial (ICFE)
  • Cambridge IGCSE: 1st oder 2nd Language with B2
  • Pearson PTE Academic: 59 points
  • TOEIC: Listening and Reading Test 785 points, Speaking Test 160 points, Writing Test 150 points
  • telc B2 certificate
  • UNIcert II
  • completed degree in English Studies or American Studies
  • completed degree with English as the language of instruction
  • proof of professional qualification as state examined interpreter / translator
