Open Science
What does Open Science mean?
Open Science deals with sharing. Open Science means designing the research process as accessible and transparent as possible. This includes not only to make academic publications openly accessible but also to open the process of their origin and elaboration.

For which reasons Open Science is relevant?
Open scientific procedures become more and more common standard in academic work. Professorships, faculties, universities, research funding organizations and, last but not least, governments demand increasingly Open Science as standard. Thus, in order to become familiar and experienced with Open Science, it is recommendable to begin with it as early as possible.
Which Open Science-skills may I already acquire during studies?
- to become familiar with the topic Open Science:
For starting with the topic, the information websites of the University Library or the information websites of the Open Science-Initiative of the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences resp. the corresponding Instagram-channel are recommendable. For all who would like to deepen their knowledge, it might be appropriate to participate in a MOOC dealing with the topic (for example MOOC regarding Open Science of Delft University of Technology). - to search for open publications:
It is worth getting familiar with some Open Access-related tools for searching. For subject-specific information regarding important tools for searching, please consult the websites of the Open Access Network. - to learn to handle data sensibly:
Already during studies, it is useful to acquire skills in the collection and documentation of project-relevant data. Skills of that kind are part of good scientific practice. For comprehensive information as well as collections of tools for a sophisticated and fair (open) data management processed according to subjects, please consult the websites of forschungsdaten.info. - to design own projects in an open manner:
Depending on the respective subject, there are different ways for approaching the implementation of Open Science. In social sciences, for instance, you may apply for a pre-registration of a project, in natural sciences you may work with an electronic lab book, in the humanities you may deal with open data within text and data mining. It is also recommendable to participate in Book Clubs for the exchange about Open Science or to engage in (student) Open Science-initiatives in order to get a first orientation in the Open Science-world.
