New Appointment

PD Dr. Veronika Karnowski was appointed as a new professor by the rector of Chemnitz University of Technology on May 12, 2023.

On May 12, 2023, private lecturer Dr. Veronika Karnowski was newly appointed as a professor at Chemnitz University of Technology. Effective immediately, Veronika Karnowski is heading the Professorship of Communication and Media Studies at the Faculty of Humanities at Chemnitz University of Technology.

About the person: Prof. Dr. Veronika Karnowski

Veronika Karnowski completed her Master's Degree in Communication Studies, Business Administration, and Political Science with "very good" at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU).

She received her doctorate from the University of Zurich in 2008 and habilitated in 2018 at LMU Munich in the field of media & communication.

In addition to her long-term activities as a researcher at LMU Munich, visiting and adjunct professorships led her to the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, the University of Leipzig, the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, and the University of Erfurt.

Since 2013, Veronika Karnowski has been a founding co-editor of the Mobile Media & Communication. From 2015 to 2017, she was the founding chair of the Mobile Communication Division of the International Communication Association. Since 2022, she is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.

Her research interests lie in the description and analysis of technological media change in users’ everyday lives. Her work mainly concentrates on mobile and social media in different contexts from societal news diffusion to health communication.

At Chemnitz University of Technology, Veronika Karnowski wants to tie in with her previous research at the interface between humans and technology. She is interested in both theoretical works on the nature of mobile media, their appropriation and the situational character of their use, as well as empirical work in the areas of health communication, social inequalities, and societal news diffusion.

In teaching, she will contribute her expertise both on the fundamentals of communication studies and her research foci to the courses of the Institute for Media Research at the Faculty of Humanities. It is important to her to convey to students the joy of intellectual engagement with the academic content and to encourage them to critically question theories and methods.

Veronika Karnowski is looking forward to the disciplinary and interdisciplinary exchange and cooperation with her colleagues and students at Chemnitz University of Technology.
