Present Research Project

Flowable Bio-Based Compounds for PEM Bipolar Plates (BIOPLATTE)

The goal of the BIOPLATTE project is to develop a bio-thermoplastic-based graphite compound with very high fill levels (≥ 80%) and good processing properties in isothermal injection molding for use in low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. This will create a symbolic bridge between standard machinery and innovative bio-thermoplastic-based graphite compounds.

The innovation of this research project consists, firstly, of the bio-thermoplastic-based graphite compound with very high fill levels (≥ 80%) and good processing properties. To achieve this, the use of a low-viscosity matrix material is essential. Secondly, the production of graphitic PEM bipolar plates with fill levels (≥ 75%) in injection molding/injection compression molding can currently only be realized using variothermal processes. Therefore, the further innovative aspect lies in the production of the BHP using isothermal injection molding and isothermal tooling technology. The use of the resulting BHP is intended to be ensured in conventional low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells.
