ThermOSS
Present Research Project

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are crucial for the energy transition, but still face challenges such as cold-start performance. At ambient temperatures below 0°C, starting problems and cell component degradation can occur. The ThermOSS project aims to develop a technological solution for improved cold-start performance of high-performance PEM fuel cells, thereby expanding technological expertise in the Chemnitz region.

Together with the Fraunhofer IFAM, a fuel cell test platform for heavy-duty applications will be developed that enables cold starts at temperatures as low as -40°C using metal hydrides. For this purpose, the professorship's own research platform, OpenSourceStack, will be expanded to include a variant with a 300 cm² active area, and a thermo-booster in the form of a metal hydride reactor will be integrated into the stack structure.
