Renewed cooperation between the WOT and the Chemnitz professional fire brigade
On 25 September 2021, the Chemnitz fire brigade held an official dangerous goods exercise in the WOT laboratories in the Erfenschlag section of Chemnitz University of Technology.
„When detoxifying a cyanide electrolyte, a laboratory employee accidentally uses the wrong chemical. The result is hydrocyanic acid. The employee falls to the floor and spills hydrochloric acid.“ The scenario given to the members of the Chemnitz fire brigade during the hazardous materials exercise was simple, but would be highly dangerous for the people in the affected laboratory area. Regular training of laboratory employees, operational instructions, risk assessments and other quality assurance measures actively serve to prevent accidents. However, regular training courses are also organised for the emergency services so that they can take the right measures quickly and directly in the event of an emergency. This time, the laboratory area for chemical and galvanic coating technology at the WOT professorship served as the venue.
It was interesting to see that rescuing people is of course the main priority in such an operation, but that the positioning of the vehicles in the outdoor area must also be precisely coordinated, the removal of hazards must be carried out using chemical protection suits correctly, the securing of chemicals requires a great deal of skill, and finally that all actively securing emergency personnel and objects used must be decontaminated in specially constructed showers.
