On 30 March 2021, Martin Löbel successfully defended his dissertation entitled „Influence of the structure and manufacturing route on the tribological behaviour of thermally sprayed high-entropy alloys“.

High entropy alloys represent a new development approach for metallic materials without a property-determining main element. Based on this approach, a promising combination of properties has been demonstrated. In his work, Dr Löbel dealt with the systematic transfer of these alloys, which had previously been considered primarily on the basis of solid materials, to coating technology. The first step was to develop a suitable production route for thermally sprayed coating systems. The detailed investigations into the process-structure-property relationships were carried out on alloys with variable structures. The focus of the investigations was to determine the determining influencing factors and their influence on the tribological property profile. To evaluate the influence of the size of the structural features, the heterogeneity and possible imbalance states, solid materials produced by melting and powder metallurgy were considered as a reference. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of the process-structure-property relationships of thermally sprayed and powder metallurgically processed high-entropy alloys.

The work will soon be published under the IWW's own publishing house in the series „Werkstoffe und werkstofftechnische Anwendungen“ and in the Qucosa portal ( https://www.qucosa.de/startseite/ ).
