Cooperation with the BMW Group at the Leipzig plant gives students an insight into production

As part of the course „Corrosion and Wear“, students were given an extensive tour of the BMW plant in Leipzig

On 8 January 2025, Dr Zechmann and his colleagues, Dr Jeschke and Dr Lässig, gave interested students an in-depth insight into the corrosion protection concept and the coating of the car bodies produced at the Leipzig plant. The process chain, which includes all steps from pre-treatment and cathodic dip painting (CDP) to the finished painted body, was demonstrated in detail. The students were able to experience the innovative, resource-conserving and energy-saving processes at the BMW plant in Leipzig at close quarters. In addition, the students were given an insight into modern and sustainable bath management and maintenance as well as waste water treatment. The test laboratories, which check that the required quality and stability of the processes are achieved, were also presented. In addition to materialographic preparation, a wide range of spectroscopic and imaging methods, including electron microscopy, are available here.

The exciting insights into production offered the students a very good opportunity to deepen the knowledge acquired in the course „Corrosion and Wear“ with practical relevance.

We would like to thank Dr Zechmann, Dr Jeschke and Dr Lässig for the opportunity to visit the paint shop and for the many detailed insights. A continuation of the insightful co-operation in the field of surface technology is planned. The basis for this was created by the Memorandum of Understanding between Chemnitz University of Technology and the BMW Group Leipzig plant.
