Sonic-Gait— Auditory Gait Analysis Without Sensors

AI & Vision
Project Period 01.10.2025 – 30.04.2026
Funding BMWi
TUC Contact Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolfram Hardt

Clinical gait analysis is an important diagnostic tool in neurology and rehabilitation — for example in Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke care, or orthopaedic conditions. Existing systems typically rely on body sensors, pressure plates or elaborate laboratory camera systems, which hampers their use in everyday clinical practice. What is missing is a low-threshold, sensor-free method that presents gait information in a way that is immediately experienceable and comprehensible.

Sonic-Gait explores the possibilities of gait sonification — making movement patterns audible — based on modern Deep Learning methods for Human Pose Recognition, entirely without body sensors. The extracted gait parameters are translated into acoustic signals in real time. The result: gait patterns are not only visualised but made directly experienceable through sound — for physicians, therapists, and patients alike.
