Programme description

The Master programme in Public Health - Prevention and Evaluation at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences of the TU Chemnitz is an advanced inter-disciplinary, scientific programme organised by the Institute of Sociology. It aims at Bachelor graduates of the courses of Sociology, Psychology, and Prevention, Rehabilitation and Fitness Sports of the TU Chemnitz and all other graduates who have gained a sociological Bachelor degree. The course prepares students for positions in the areas of health promotion and prevention, a growing and internationally most-sought after labour market boasting an especially positive development in employment figures.

The Master programme provides students with core competencies within the scope of a quantitative-empirical educational training that is genuinely oriented towards the subject of behavioural and social sciences and focusses on the conceptual work for interventions in the field of health-related prevention. This enables students to

  • Independently create concepts for intervention measures and to
  • Plan, execute and analyse empirical projects that can be utilised to evaluate measures of health promotion.

Emphasising the field of evaluation also gives priority to developing specific methodical expertise.

The programme concept equally profits from the competencies of the various institutes of the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. That means, classes are taught by designated expert teaching staff of the courses of Sociology, Psychology, and Prevention, Rehabilitation and Fitness Sports. This broad spectrum of courses and classes is of benefit to the quality of the programme.

Potential career paths

10% of the employees in Germany work in the healthcare sector. Expenditures especially regarding the areas of prevention and health promotion are high, are increasing in an international context, and ensure the livelihood of potential employees in this sector. In Germany, for example, five million people benefit from measures of health primary prevention. Prevention and also the promotion of health in the workplace are growth markets, especially against the backdrop of demographic development and an increase in the cost of medical treatment due to medical progress.

Beyond research, students participating in this study programme receive a first-rate preparation for management positions in the fields of

  • Market research
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Health insurances
  • The Public Health Service, i.e. local health authorities, State Offices for Health as well as federal organisations and institutes (Robert Koch Institute, Paul Ehrlich Institute, Federal Centre for Health Education, etc.)
  • Private-sector healthcare providers
  • Medical wholesale and retail sector.
