Course Details: Data Engineering

Module number: 263032-302, last updated: 10 March 2026

Content

This module is based on a case study in the field of Data Engineering. Based on the requirements of a given application scenario, students design and implement an appropriate database or data structure following a structured development approach. The module covers in particular:

  • analysis and specification of requirements for the database or data structure and selection of suitable technologies,
  • design and implementation of appropriate data structures,
  • development and application of suitable testing concepts, and
  • documentation of the development process and presentation of the results.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students are able to apply data engineering methods to a defined problem scenario. They are capable of designing, implementing, testing, and, if necessary, improving a database or data structure according to the requirements of a given application context. Students understand the relationships between different modelling levels and techniques and are able to systematically transfer and apply them.

When working on the case study in groups, students apply either a task-divided or collaborative working approach. In doing so, they further develop their communication, cooperation, and coordination skills while achieving methodological and subject-specific progress.
