Those who were unable to finish high school due to the war in Ukraine still have the opportunity to study. The Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder) has decived on an exception for this.

If the last school year could not be finished due to the war, it is still possible to apply for a degree program at a German university. However, Ukrainian school graduates usually must attend a Studienkolleg (preparatory college) beforehand. In this case, you must first complete the respective Studienkolleg (preparatory college) of the university. TU Chemnitz cooperates with the Studienkolleg Sachsen in Leipzig. In order to apply to the Studienkolleg you must have a letter of admission from TU Chemnitz. To get a letter of admission, you must apply regularly for a place in a degree program and prove at least German language skills at level B1.

The regular application deadlines are:

• summer semester: until 15 January
• winter semester: until 15 July.

If the secondary school leaving certificate is not sufficient to study in Germany, a Studienkolleg must be attended prior to the studies. The Studienkolleg is responsible for preparing foreign international applicants for studies in Germany. Depending on the field of study, a corresponding specialisation course must be attended. TU Chemnitz is working together with the Studienkolleg Sachsen in Leipzig. In general, you can either enroll regularlay for a degree program or, if applicable, take up an exchange program at TU Chemnitz via your university in Ukraine. Furthermore, you must fulfill both the formal and subject-related requirements of the respective degree program. If you would like to continue your doctorate, you will first need to find a supervisor for your research topic. Admission to the doctoral program is possible throughout the year. Please keep in mind, that you must have appropiate German and/or English language skills. More information on taking up doctoral studies can be found at: PhD at TU Chemnitz

To study in Germany, you need a "Higher Education Entrance Qualification". The Higher Education Entrance Qualification can be either direct or indirect.

You have a direct Higher Education Entrance Qualification, if your school leaving certificate is equivalent to a German secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur). If you fulfill the language and subject-related requirements of your desired degree program, you can start your studies directly.

You have an indirect Higher Education Entrance Qualification, if your school-leaving certificate is only conditionally equivalent to the German secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur). In this case, you must attend a Studienkolleg (preparatory college) beforehand.

You can use the Anabin database or the database of uni-assist e.V. to check, if your educational qualification is recognized in Germany and which Higher Education Entrance Qualification you have.

If you were unable to complete your school year or your current semester regularly this year due to the current situation, please note the decision of the "Kultusministerkonferenz" (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder) dated 5 April 2022. Your educational certificates and first year of studies will be recognised as such, even if not all reqularly required examinations can be proven. Depending on the degree program, there are different admission requirements regarding language skills and/or prior qualification. Bachelor's degree programs at TU Chemnitz are generally taught in German. In contrast, the following Master's degree programs can be studied in English (as of 3 August 2022):

A regular degree program finishes after 3 years (Bachelor's program) or 2 years (Master's program) with a degree. In an exchange program, you usually attend pre-determined courses and may be able to have them recognized by your home university. However, you cannot receive a Bachelor's or Master's degree doing an exchange program. In this case, you would have to enroll in a regular study program. Many Ukrainain students who have come to Germany would like to continue their studies here. Academic achievements from Ukraine can generally also be recognized in Germany. However, this must be clarified directly with the respective university or the examination board of the respective degree program. Usually, translations of module descriptions must be submitted. In order for academic achievements to be recognized, prospective Ukrainian students must be enrolled in a regular degree program.

If you are missing documents or if you only have incomplete documents due to the situation in Ukraine, you will not suffer any disadvantages. A decision of the Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder) regulates how German universities have to proceed in this case.

At TU Chemnitz you must submit a self-disclosure form to uni-assist which will also be given to you by uni-assist. In this form, you describe your educational background and explain why your documents are missing or are incomplete. After your information has been checked, an individual decision will be made by the university you applied for.

That depends on which degree program you wish to enroll in. In general, all Bachelor's degree programs are taught in German. There are some Master's degree programs that are taught exclusively in English, but German language skills of at least level A1 must usually be proven upon enrollment. However, there are exceptions regarding some English-taught degree programs as German is being part of the curriculum.

There are not further language courses for refugees currently on offer. Prospective refugee students from Ukraine have, however, can enroll in the regular language courses during the semester, if possible. Further information can be found at: Language Courses

In general, enrolled refugee students can take part in the regular language courses during the semester.

In addition to the regular living costs, students must pay every semester a semester contribution. Currently, the semester contribution amounts at € 271.88 (as of August 2022) and must be paid every semester. The current semester contribution and its composition can be found at: Student Service

The semester contribution consists of several parts that grant students various benefits, including e.g.:

• The Student Culture Ticket grants you free entrance to various cultural institutions in the city of Chemnitz. Detailed information on the benefits of the Student Culture Ticket can be found at: Culture Ticket
• The Semester Ticket grants you a free use of most (!! not all!!) local public transportations (ÖPNV) within Saxony. Detailed information on the benefits of the Semester Ticket, including the specific areas of validity, can be found at: Semester Ticket

According to the current state of regulations, people with a residence permit according to § 24 AufenthG (Residence Act) can apply for BAföG. However, this financing option only applies to students in regular degree programs. Guest auditors or exchange students are not entitled to BAföG but receive social benefits from the Jobcenter when they are granted a residence permit according to § 24 AufenthG. In addition, there is the possibility of taking up a part-time job or applying for scholarhips. Please keep in mind, that in case you receive social benefits, your monthly salary and payments from scholarships could be counted as income.

Refugee students and researchers who need psychological support due to the war in Ukraine can contact the Psychological Counselling Service at TU Chemnitz and arrange an appointment for a consultation. Counselling is free of charge, independent of student or residence status. Students at TU Chemnitz can apply for a place in one of the student dormitories on campus. The dormitories belong to the Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau. A monthly rent must be paid, which includes additional costs, e.g. electricity, water, internet, television. Detailed information can be found at: Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau

Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau operates a student canteen and cafeteria at both the campus Reichenhainer Straße and the campus Straße der Nationen. All students must provide proof of suficient health insurance coverage when enrolling at TU Chemnitz. A distinction is made between a statutory and private health insurance.
