Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt from Chemnitz University of Technology is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher

The researcher and Scientific Director of the MAIN Research Center at Chemnitz University of Technology is among the approximately 7.000 scientists worldwide listed in the exclusive 2022 ranking of "ISI Highly Cited Researchers"

Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt, head of the Professorship of Material Systems for Nanoelectronics and Scientific Director of the Research Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes (MAIN) at Chemnitz University of Technology, is one of the most cited researchers in the world. This is according to the current results of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Highly Cited Researcher" ranking of the American company Clarivate Analytics. Following 2018 and 2019, Prof. Schmidt is once again among the top one percent of most cited scientists worldwide and thus among the most influential scientific authors. Within this ranking, Prof. Schmidt also belongs to the group of interdisciplinary researchers whose scientific results are of particularly outstanding importance for several disciplines.

"This award is the result of a large number of contributors, rather than the accomplishment of a single person. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to my team at Chemnitz University of Technology and the members of my former research groups at IFW Dresden and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart," says Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt.

"I sincerely congratulate our colleague Oliver G. Schmidt on this renewed worldwide outstanding success, which impressively demonstrates his top-class performance in his field and beyond", says Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, President of Chemnitz University of Technology.

The citation frequency, which was awarded as part of the ranking, indicates how often researchers cite a publication in their research work. Thus, inclusion among the "ISI Highly Cited Researchers" is a decisive indicator of the scientific influence of a publication. This year, a total of 6,938 researchers from more than 70 countries were listed. In a country comparison, Germany ranks fourth worldwide with 369 "Highly Cited Researchers" behind the USA, China and the United Kingdom. The total number of the most cited researchers is made up of 3,981 awards in 21 disciplines and 3,244 interdisciplinary awards. The number of awards exceeds the actual number of honorees, as some researchers received awards due to the importance of their publications for multiple disciplines.

About the person: Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt

Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt has been the Scientific Director of the Research Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes (MAIN) at Chemnitz University of Technology since 2022. At the MAIN Research Center, fundamental physical and chemical properties of flexible nanostructured membranes ("nanomembranes") are explored and developed for their potential applications in engineering.

Prof. Oliver Schmidt has already received several awards, including the "Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2018 and one of the prestigious "ERC Advanced Grants" of the European Research Council in 2019. In 2018, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). In 2020, he became a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences. In 2022, he was appointed to the DFG Senate Committee and Grants Committee for Research Training Groups.

In recent years, Prof. Schmidt's research team achieved several groundbreaking research successes. These include the development

Background: "Highly Cited Researcher" Ranking

Clarivate Analytics, a company based in the United States, examined publications published between 2011 and 2021 to compile the current list of the most cited researchers. Among the most cited publications are those that were in the top one percent of their respective fields and years of publication. The list was first published in 2001, and it has been updated annually since 2014. Approximately 7,000 researchers are currently listed.
