Angesichts zunehmender Internationalisierung, Vernetzung und Globalisierung ist Anglistik/Amerikanistik (English Studies) heute grundlegend für die moderne Wissens- und Informationsgesellschaft.

Anglistik/Amerikanistik (English Studies) ist die Wissenschaft von der englischen Sprache und allen durch sie ausgedrückten Kulturen und Literaturen. Sie bietet Studierenden mit weitreichenden Interessen an Menschen und Kulturen eine solide Basis mit individuellen modernen Spezialisierungsmöglichkeiten.

Der Studiengang enthält Basismodule und Kernmodule mit zwei daran anschließenden Spezialisierungsmodulen sowie ein Auslandsmodul. Alle Module sind aufeinander abgestimmt und vermitteln die fachlichen Grundorientierung mit einer spezifischen Anwendungsorientierung.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) English Studies

Kurzinformationen zum B.A.-Studiengang English Studies:
Besonderheiten: „kurz, spezialisiert und trotzdem vielfältig“

  • Das Studium hat nur 6 Semester, einschließlich Auslandssemester. Man kann also schnell fertig werden, aber auch mit einem M.A. weitermachen.
  • Man studiert prinzipiell nur ein Fach (keine Nebenfächer)
  • Man studiert 2 Jahre einen Überblick über Sprache, Literatur und Kultur und kann sich im 3. Jahr spezialisieren.
  • Man braucht KEIN Latinum, aber SEHR gute Englischkenntnisse.
  • Für diesen Studiengang gibt es keine Zulassungsbeschränkung. ABER: nach der Zulassung müssen alle NEUEN Studierenden an einem Einstufungstest teilnehmen, damit sie die ihrem Englischniveau entsprechenden Kurse nutzen können.
  • Leistungen werden kumuliert: es gibt in der Regel am Ende der Semester MODULPRÜFUNGEN, die ein Studien-/Ausbildungsgebiet abschließen.
  • Hat man einen BA-Abschluss, so kann man seine Kenntnisse in einem zweijährigen Masterstudiengang vertiefen.

Congratulations on your decision to pursue a degree in English Studies at Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC)! Here are some hints on what you can do to ensure a successful start into your life as a student: 

By now you will certainly have read the Program Brochure (click here for the accessible version) about the programme. Next, you should make yourself familiar with the documents informing you about the structure and contents of the classes you will be taking in the course of the next years: 

  • the Studienordnung, which informs you of the official framework of your studies
  • the Prüfungsordnung, which provides information on the exams you will have to take
  • the Modulbescheibungen (included at the end of the Studienordnung, which explain the contents and requirements of the individual modules of your studies
  • the Studienablaufplan (also included in the Studienordnung, which tells you in detail which courses you have to take in what semester. Accordingly, you will find out here which courses you are expected to take in your first semester.

Now that you have a clearer idea of what your studies will look like, there are four things left for you to do before you can go to your first class:

  1. 1. The Place­ment Test (BA, LAGS, Erasmus)
  2. 2. Create your class schedule (all students)
  3. 3. Sign up for the English Mailing List (all students)
  4. 4. Attend the Welcome Meeting for first-semester students (all students)

1. The Placement Test

Most required courses are taught in English. Before you begin taking English classes, it’s important to make sure you enrol in the right course in obligatory the English Language Training: Basics module. This module is composed of a Foundation Course (FC) and an Integrated Language Course (ILC). The Placement Test shows whether you can start your studies with the Integrated Language Course (ILC) or whether you need to take the Foundation Course (FC) first. For this reason, all new BA/BSc students must take the English Placement Test. This includes Erasmus or Exchange students interested in taking the Foundation course (FC) or Integrated Language Course (ILC). The Placement Test consists of a computer-based part that tests your writing, grammar and reading skills, and an oral part that tests your speaking and pronunciation skills.

To take the computer-based part of the test, you must log on to a computer in a TUC computer lab. Please be sure to get your TUC login (username and password) from the Universitätsrechenzentrum several days before your test date. Bring that login information and your TUC card with you when you come to take the Placement Test.
The Placement Test takes place yearly in the first week of term, before the start of lectures. To find out about Placement Test dates and to register for the test, please email Dr. Isabelle van der Bom.

Why do I have to take the Placement Test?

  • All students in Bachelor level classes, including Erasmus or exchange students interested in taking the Foundation or Integrated Language course must take the Placement Test.
  • The results of the Placement Test show whether you can start your studies with the Integrated Language Course (ILC) in the module English Language Training: Basics or whether you need to take the Foundation Course (FC) first. (NB: Your participation in other courses and modules is not affected. You can take literature, culture, linguistics, etc. courses independent from your Placement Test results.)
  • Students who take the Foundation Course (FC) will take an intensive Integrated Language Course (ILC) offered between the semesters. By taking the FC and the intensive ILC, students who began their studies with the FC start their second semester courses with students who began their studies with the ILC. Details about the intensive ILC will be given to the Foundation Course participants during the semester.

When does the Placement Test take place and how do I register for it?

  • The Placement Test takes place yearly in the first week of term, before the start of lectures. To find out about Placement Test dates and to register for the test, please email Dr. Isabelle van der Bom.

What should I bring to the Placement Test?

  • Bring your TUC login and password to the computer lab. You can get a TUC login and password from the Universitätsrechenzentrum.
  • Bring your TUC card to the computer lab. Your matriculation number is needed to take the computer-based part of the test.

How will I learn about my result?

You will be informed about your test results via e-mail after all students have taken the Placement Test.

Summary: Taking the Placement Test

  • Step 1: Get your TUC login (username and password) from the Universitätsrechenzentrum.
  • Step 2: Sign up for the Placement Test by emailing Dr. Isabelle van der Bom.
  • Step 3: On the day of the test, bring your TUC login and TUC card to the computer lab.
  • Step 4: Check your e-mail to see whether you have been admitted to the Integrated Language Course or whether you first need to take the Foundation Course.

2. Create your class schedule

What many freshmen find very surprising and often very challenging is that they have to create their schedule of classes on their own. However, this should not be a problem at all when you know the following:

  • For every semester, the Department of English issues a Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis (annotated course catalogue), in short KoVo. This is a pdf file which not only contains information about the professors and instructors at the Department, activities and events, but it also tells students which classes are being offered and when they take place. You can view the KoVo here.
  • The KoVo is usually published at the end of the previous semester. This means that the KoVo for the winter semester is usually available in August/September, so you have ample time to create your schedule before your first semester starts.
  • Based on the information from the Studienablaufplan regarding the courses you should take in your first semester in combination with the information from the KoVo on when these courses take place, you can now start to compose your own personal schedule.
  • For the more computer- and internet-savvy among you, it might be interesting to know that you can also use the central Stundenplaner on the university website to help you create your schedule. As the Stundenplaner contains all courses offered at TUC (as opposed to the English Department’s courses only), it is vital that you know which courses you need to take before you start working with it.

Summary: Creating your schedule

  • Step 1: In the Studienablaufplan, find out which courses you are required to take in semester 1.
  • Step 2: Download the KoVo
  • Step 3: Create your personal schedule by selecting the courses you need to take and based on the information in the Placement Test result notification e-mail.

 

3. Sign up for the English Mailing List

In order to inform our students quickly of important news (changes to courses, office hours, events etc.), the English Department has a Mailing List, to which all students should subscribe. Once subscribed, you will automatically receive all information posted to the Mailing List in your e-mail mailbox. 4. Attend the Welcome Meeting for first-semester students

A Welcome Meeting for all first-semester students is offered at the beginning of October. You will get to know the staff of the Department, receive important information about your studies and have the chance to ask any questions you might still have. Check our Department Website News for updated information on the exact date and time of the meeting.

Informationen zur Begabtenförderung

In Deutschland sind elf Begabtenförderungswerke bundesweit tätig. Mit Hilfe staatlicher Zuschüsse werden Stipendien an Studierende und Promovierende vergeben. Im einzelnen handelt es sich um die folgenden Stiftungen:

Die Stiftungen haben unterschiedliche Voraussetzungen für die Gewährung von Stipendien. Ihnen ist jedoch gemeinsam, dass sie neben den fachlichen und persönlichen Voraussetzungen Wert auf das Engagement der Stipendiaten in Staat und Gesellschaft legen. Die Förderungswerke stehen Parteien, den Kirchen oder anderen gesellschaftlich relevanten Gruppen weltanschaulich nahe und erwarten von ihren Stipendiaten, dass sie an der Arbeit der Stiftung interessiert sind und aktiv daran teilnehmen. An den einzelnen Hochschulen werden die Stiftungen durch Vertrauensdozenten vertreten.

Zu den wichtigsten Initiativen, die Anglisten neben dem Auslandsstudium wärmstens empfohlen wird, gehört ein Berufspraktikum. Das kann in der vorlesungsfreien Zeit im Inland oder im anglophonen Ausland geschehen. Hierzu können die folgenden Adressen sehr hilfreich sein.
