C/C-Pultrusion

In the joint project "Development of large-scale production processes for the manufacture of ceramic composite-based oxidation-protected pultrusion profiles for high-temperature applications", three research institutions in Chemnitz have set themselves the goal of increasing the attractiveness and economic efficiency of C/C composites, which are highly interesting for furnace construction. Using the pultrusion process, carbon fibre-reinforced phenolic resin profiles are produced at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU, which are then converted into C/C and C/C-SiC composites at the Chair of Composites and Material Compounds. In parallel, a coating is being applied and validated at the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering, which is intended to make the material more resistant to wear, diffusion and oxidation in the challenging environment of heat treatment processes. The project will culminate in a charging rack demonstrator that will show the advantages of the new production route. The project committee, which is made up of 18 companies from different branches of industry, shows how great the interest of industry is. The kick-off meeting of the project, which is funded by the BMWK for 24 months, took place on 12th of October 2023. The research project is embedded in the activities of Research Association of Industrial Furnace Manufactures (FOGI).”.
