Scientific profile

The Institute for Machine Tools and Production Processes (IWP) brings together at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology the Professorship Production Systems and Processes, the Professorship of Forming Forming and Joining, the Professorship of Adaptronics and Functional Lightweight Construction, the Professorship of Micromanufacturing Technology, the Professorship of Virtual Manufacturing Technology and the Professorship of Manufacturing Measurement Technology.
The institute has developed into an efficient and recognized research and training facility for production technology in Germany. The focus is on conducting, promoting and coordinating research and teaching in the areas of machine tools and production processes, including the methods and procedures of manufacturing technology as well as the structure and function of manufacturing systems.

The main areas of application are mechanical engineering, the automotive and supplier industries as well as medical and micro-manufacturing technology. These areas are characterized in particular by the application of information and communication technologies, modeling and simulation techniques as well as functional integration through manufacturing technology. The challenge and opportunity at the same time are sustainability aspects and the advancing digitalization as part of Industry 4.0 to strengthen Germany as a business location.

The personnel unity of the management of the professorships of adaptive electronics and functional lightweight design in production and production systems and processes with the institute management of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU guarantees basic research that is geared to industrial needs and that is suitable for later use ongoing training of students.
