Microcredential — Drone Systems Engineering for Safety-Critical Applications

Drones ASE
Project Period 01.04.2026 – 30.09.2026
Funding TUCademy · Co-financed by the EU. Tax revenues based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.
TUC Contact Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Wolfram Hardt Dr. Ariane Heller

Drone systems are taking on increasingly complex inspection and security monitoring tasks in industry and public infrastructure. Beyond capable hardware and modular platform concepts, cybersecurity, secure communication architectures and robust data infrastructures are becoming central success factors. The ability to capture, transmit, store and analyse sensor data reliably, tamper-proof and in compliance with regulations is becoming a decisive competitive advantage. Existing courses do not yet address this interface competence spanning systems engineering, software development and cybersecurity in a compact, practice-oriented form.

The microcredential trains participants in the conceptual, technical and security-oriented development of industrial drone systems for inspection and safety-critical applications. Core topics include: system and software architecture, platform concepts and mission planning, interfaces between hardware and embedded software, secure data and communication infrastructures, and edge- and cloud-based data processing. The industry partner is KMS Composites UG, which presents real-world development challenges.

The challenge-based learning concept addresses complex systemic relationships through independent work on real problems from KMS Composites UG, with scientific and industry-oriented coaching. Quality is ensured through transparent assessments, continuous evaluation and regular feedback loops. The course is extra-curricular, open to external participants from industry, and delivered entirely in English.
