Final theses

Applications for the Master's thesis can be submitted for the summer semester by March 3rd and for the winter semester by September 30th of each year.

An application should only be made if it is also planned to register the Master's thesis in the same semester.

Supervision commitments expire after one semester, unless otherwise agreed with the supervisor.

Application forms for the Master's thesis can be found at the following links:

An outline of ideas for one or two Master's thesis topics must be attached to the form. The outline of ideas should contain the following points if possible:

  • Topic and preliminary question
  • Reason for choice of topic
  • Procedure (literature work / empirical work / cooperation with practice partner)
  • Methodological approach
  • Rough structure

It is important to ensure that the topic with which an application is made to a chair fits the respective chair profile.

In the case of a choice of topic not related to the chair, the chair holders or supervisors reserve the right to adapt or reject the topic accordingly.

Exceptions to this rule are only topics that cut across the chair profile if these are explicitly offered as research topics by the respective chair.

The applications are sifted after the deadline and distributed to the chairs, taking into account the preferences of the students.

Afterwards, the individual chairs coordinate internally on the supervision of the papers, also taking into account the capacities, and then contact the candidates as soon as possible.

It may not be possible for everyone to write to the respective "desired supervisor" at the "desired chair".

However, the more concretely the ideas are presented, the easier it will be to assign a supervisor who can optimally supervise and support the desired topic.

No concrete promises of supervision are made in advance of the applications.

However, it is possible and useful to make preliminary arrangements with possible supervisors at the three chairs.

Registration takes place after consultation with the respective supervisor.

In general, the thesis should be registered in the same semester in which the supervisory relationship is taken up.

Please note that the supervisory relationship can be terminated by the respective chair after one semester if the thesis has not been registered.

For registration, use the form provided by the Central Examination Office and have it signed by the professor of the respective chair.

The processing time runs after registration of the Master's thesis at the Central Examination Office and is 20 weeks.

After confirmation of supervision, participation in all master colloquia of the respective chair in the current semester as well as a presentation of the concept in the colloquium are expected.

The master colloquium has proven to be very important for the quality of the thesis, as the dialogue and reflection in the plenum offer particularly intensive learning opportunities.

There is no defence after submission of the Master's thesis.

Form requirements should be taken from the guidelines of the respective chair and/or discussed with the responsible supervisor.
