TU Chemnitz Receives Recognition for Erasmus-Funded Foreign Language Project

For the Erasmus+ project Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Palestinian HEls: An e-Learning Initiative that Bridges Educational and Socio-Political Gaps (TEFL-ePAL), Prof. Dr. Josef Schmied from Al-Quds Open University was honored

On March 22, 2022, the conference Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Palestinian HEls: An e-Learning Initiative that Bridges Educational and Socio-Political Gaps (TEFL-ePAL) took place at Al-Quds Open University in Ramallah. The focus of the TEFL-ePAL program, which is funded by the European Union under Erasmus+, is to improve English language teaching through innovative digital formats and platforms. Prof. em. Dr. Josef Schmied, former head of the Professorship of English and Linguistics, is coordinating the project on the part of Chemnitz University of Technology. Sven Albrecht, a doctoral student at the Institute for English and American Studies, took over quality assurance as project manager. Schmied received recognition for his commitment at the TEFL-ePAL conference. Accordingly, Chemnitz University of Technology was awarded by the Minister of Higher Education and the President of Al-Quds Open University in recognition of its outstanding participation in TEFL-ePAL.

Background: TEFL-ePAL

In 2018, the Erasmus+ project TEFL-ePAL was submitted to the EU and approved. In 2019, work began with European partners at a kick-off event in Turkey. The project aims to enable significant improvements in flexible curriculum design, digital educational resources, infrastructure, teacher training and professional development. For the teaching and learning of foreign languages via the online education platform Moodle, the project produced four textbooks as well as exercises and integrated videos.
