Research

In media psychology, research focuses on how people think, feel, and behave when using media—specifically examining the selection of media content, its active and passive reception, and the effects that arise from media use.

At our department, these aspects likewise form the core of our research activities. We draw on theories from various core disciplines of psychology—particularly social psychology—to contribute to a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of contemporary media use.

Methodologically, we primarily rely on quantitative research approaches and are especially committed to conducting online and laboratory experiments. In addition, we employ a range of other methods from the social sciences, such as correlational surveys, content analyses, and meta-analyses.

A central mission of our deparment is to actively involve students in the research process—for example, through theses or research specializations. Furthermore, the chair has been and continues to be involved in major research projects and collaborations funded by institutions such as the DFG, BMBF, and ESF.
