14th Materials Technology Colloquium (01./02.09.2011)

The traditional Materials Science Colloquium was held for the 14th time at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology. The materials science conference on 1 and 2 September 2011 was held together with the 9th Industrial Conference on Surface and Heat Treatment Technology. The 240 national and international guests were able to learn about the latest research results, innovative applications and process engineering developments in over 80 scientific lectures and poster contributions.

The thematic focal points of this year's conference included thermal spraying and special problems of surface treatment, build-up welding, various joining technologies and tribology. In addition, the organisers were particularly pleased to be able to present the research results of two collaborative research centres (SFBs) to their guests. Thus, the results from the work to date in the Collaborative Research Centres SFB 692 of the TU Chemnitz "High-strength aluminium-based lightweight materials for safety components" and SFB 799 "TRIP-Matrix Composite" of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg were presented.

Many technical discussions were held at the posters and exhibits on specific research topics. Highlights here were coating technology and novel lightweight materials for safety components. In the evening, awards were presented for the best conference contributions. These were awarded to: 1st Verena Merklinger (SGL Carbon GmbH), 2nd Rico Drehmann (TU Chemnitz), 3rd Jan Nebel (TU Dortmund). The prize for the best poster contribution went to Thomas Mäder (TU Chemnitz).

The scientific contributions were summarised in a refereed conference volume (http://www.wtk.tu-chemnitz.de).

The15th Materials Technology Colloquiumwill take place next year on20 and 21 Septemberheld.

Even the champagne reception at the 14th Materials Technology Colloquium provided an opportunity for numerous discussions.
