10th Materials Technology Colloquium Chemnitz and
7th Industry Conference on Surface and Heat Treatment Technology (27/28. 09. 2007)

This year, the 10th Materials Technology Colloquium was held at the TU Chemnitz at the Chair of Composite Materials in conjunction with the 7th Industry Conference „Surface and Heat Treatment Technology“. Every two years, the conference is coupled with an industry trade fair and thus forms a particularly efficient forum for discussions between science and practice.

The event was opened by Prof. Wielage. In his welcoming speech, he warmly welcomed national and international participants and guests of honour. The guests of honour included Prof. Matthes, Rector of our University, who himself honoured the lecture event with his presence on his birthday, Prof. Steffens, Honorary Doctor of our Faculty, as well as Prof. Bobzin from RWTH in Aachen. Guests of honour from abroad were Prof. Lee, from Keimyung University in South Korea, Prof. Kern, who now teaches as Rector at the University in Krems, and Prof. Pawlowski from Villeneuve University in France.

The numerous lectures and posters were devoted to a wide range of topics, such as

  • Thermal spraying,
  • Galvanic metal deposition,
  • Anodise,
  • Powder coating,
  • Deposition welding/brazing,
  • Detection of impurities during wave and selective soldering,
  • Laser treatment,
  • Tool coating,
  • Boundary layer heat treatment and
  • Simulation in surface and heat treatment technology
assigned. They formed the basis for lively talks and discussions about research results, innovations and developments in research and practice. The individual sessions were introduced with various overview lectures. Prof. Bobzin spoke about „PVD – A success story with a future“, Dr. Schwenk about „Thermal spraying today“, Dr. Gegner about „Adhesive bonding technology – Joining in the 21st. Century“, Dr. Lampke on „Status quo and trends in electroplating“ and Prof. Vollertsen spoke on „Customised tribology through laser surface treatment“. The conference participants also took advantage of the opportunity to make contact with various companies in the industrial exhibition that took place at the same time. The conference was a successful joint event with about 150 participants.
