ALTRAINAV - Alternative Train Navigation
This joint project represents a collaboration between German and Czech research institutions and SMEs. This cross-border initiative is funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and co-financed by public funds based on the budget adopted by the Saxon State Parliament. The project duration extends over two years, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025.
The central goal of the project is the development of an innovative, alternative, and cost-effective train localization system, summarized under the term "Alternative Position, Navigation, and Timing" (A-PNT). This system aims to provide a reliable alternative to existing localization methods while offering economic advantages for railway operators. To achieve this, the project includes high-precision mapping of a test track in the German-Czech border region, stretching from Schwarzenberg through Vejprty to Chomutov. Building on this, an innovative localization method based on optical sensing will be implemented and validated using LiDAR and camera sensors. The collected sensor data will ultimately be processed by AI on embedded hardware, thereby laying the foundation for precise train localization.
