Nature is a central supplier of raw materials for humans. Which raw materials are available on our planet for a sustainable and circular bioeconomy? Through which processes and technical facilities can these raw materials be processed and utilized, and what interactions with nature are to be expected? The module is structured according to the following natural raw material categories:
  • Renewable raw materials of the 1st generation: edible biomass (e.g., sugar, starch and oils, biochemistry and utilization options)
  • Renewable raw materials of the 2nd generation: non-edible biomass (e.g., lignocellulose-based products, biochemistry and utilization options)
  • Renewable raw materials of the 3rd generation: land-independent raw material production (e.g., aquatic plants and algae, biochemistry and utilization options)
  • Renewable raw materials of the 4th generation: direct use of CO2 by cell factories (biocatalysis)
  • Renewable raw materials of the 5th generation: direct use of CO2 (Carbon Capture and Utilization)
In a semester-long project work, students examine in detail a self-selected aspect of this interaction and present the results to the learning group.

Qualification Goals

The students possess fundamental knowledge of the interactions between the environment/nature and humans. They are able to apply this knowledge in the course of project-oriented learning, adapt their own behavior, and reflect upon the results achieved.

Prerequisites

None.
