For a greener TU Chemnitz

Where ideas are followed up by concrete action: On 3 June the TU, the Student Union, landscapers, garden centers and building experts pave the way for the beautification of the Mensa area of campus

“More green!“ First thoughts of campus greening were led by a group of the TU Chemnitz students together with representatives of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, in collaboration with Karl-Ludwig Keller, the garden and landscape architect. During the innovation contest "Deine IDEE für die TUC", their idea made it to the final round. Because the Rector would like to support as many of the contest ideas as possible, this project was further pursued. The result will be visible to all on June 3rd, 2015 during the Campus and Sports Festival: An area of about 100 square meters will be planted with shrubs and flowers in the immediate vicinity of the Mensa and the Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau with the support of the Department of Ecology and Sustainability (NATUC) of the Student Council of the TU, among others. The campaign is sponsored by the Dehner GmbH and Co KG in Chemnitz.

“Many students and staff obviously saw deficits in the green areas at the TU Chemnitz and were missing a rational design of these areas. This gave us the idea to showcase possible initial solutions“, reports Prof. Dr. Friedrich Thießen, Holder of the Professorship of Finance and Banking, and adds: “The very first concrete approaches originate from the student group NATUC, who have already been taking care of an ecological bed in front of a dormitory at on Vettersstraße for several years.“ Partial successes which are already visible, which are to follow a comprehensive approach in the future, are important for the motivation of all those involved. “This is important on the path to having more green on campus“, said the professor.

Prof. Thießen is optimistic that further steps towards the creation of areas specifically intended for work, relaxing and meeting up in the outdoor facilities of the university and the Student Union will follow, and he is in conversation about that with the Public Enterprise, the Saxonian Real Estate and Construction Management, the Division of Building Management and Procurement at the TU, the University Communications Department, the NATUC representatives and the Student Union.
