Open Letter from the President regarding energy saving measures from 29. September 2022

Dear Professors, Staff, and Students,
Dear Members of the University Community,

The current energy crisis poses enormous challenges also for Chemnitz University of Technology. On the one hand, it is necessary to make an effective contribution to energy saving and to implement the Ordinance of the Federal Government for Securing the Energy Supply on Measures Effective in the Short Term (EnSikuMaV). On the other hand, it must be ensured that teaching and research operations and supporting service processes are maintained and that the technical infrastructure is not damaged.

The EnSikuMaV specifies the following restrictions and measures for workspaces until 28 February 2023, which must be implemented by Chemnitz University of Technology:

  • The heating of work rooms for physically light and work carried out predominantly while being seated may only be carried out up to a maximum of 19°C. In this respect, please set the room radiator thermostats to lower than 3.
  • Workrooms for physically light activity predominantly standing or walking may only be heated to a maximum of 18°C, which requires setting the room heater thermostats to no more than the middle position between levels 2 and 3.
  • The use of any other heating devices in workrooms is not permitted.
  • Rooms that are not used for people to stay in (e.g. stairwells, corridors, storage rooms) must not be heated, so please set the thermostats to frost protection level. A setting up to level 1 is permissible if this is required to ensure safety requirements or to prevent damage.
  • The room temperature of centrally controlled workrooms and other rooms is regulated accordingly by the Department of Facility Management and Technology via the building control system.
  • Washbasins may only be operated with cold water. Boilers and instantaneous water heaters at sinks in decentralized rooms must be turned off.

We hope the EnSikuMaV measures to be implemented by Chemnitz University of Technology will not cause you too much inconvenience and thank you very much for your understanding.

In addition, we would like to appeal to all members of the university community to contribute individually to reducing energy consumption.

A catalog of measures to be implemented, information on individual energy-saving options, and an overview of measures already initiated centrally are published in the information on energy saving at Chemnitz University of Technology. These will be successively expanded and updated - including measures that are currently still being coordinated and clarified.

If you have any questions, or if you have any suggestions or ideas for energy-saving measures at our university, please contact the Department of Facility Management and Technology (e-mail: dezernat-bau@verwaltung.tu-chemnitz.de).

Once again, thank you very much for your understanding and contribution!

Kind regards

Yours Maximilian Eibl

(by proxy for the President)
