Chemnitz University of Technology Colours its Logo in the Colours of the Ukrainian National Flag as a Sign of Solidarity with Ukraine and its Ukrainian Partner Institutions

"Chemnitz University of Technology condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine utterly and expresses its utmost concern for the people in Ukraine as well as for its Ukrainian partners. We fully endorse the declaration of the German Rectors' Conference and, as a visible sign for a sovereign Ukraine and a peaceful, free, and self-determined coexistence in Europe, we are colouring our logo in the colours of the Ukrainian national flag," says the President of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier. "Our solidarity also goes out to the courageous protesters who are taking to the streets in Russian cities these days against their government's war," adds Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice Rector for Academic and International Affairs.

The TU Chemnitz has several partner institutions in Ukraine with which various faculties maintain intensive exchange relations. These include the Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Lviv State Ivan Franko University, the National Technical University of Ukraine Kiev (Kiev Polytechnical Institute) and the National University Lviv Polytechnic. In addition, 15 Ukrainians are currently studying at Chemnitz University of Technology.

The coloured logo of Chemnitz University of Technology shines both on the website www.tu-chemnitz.de and in the university's social media channels.

Solidarity with Ukraine and Ukrainian Universities: HRK Condemns Russian Attack

In a statement, the President of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), Professor Dr Peter-André Alt, has strongly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

„This is a deeply distressing day. Our solidarity goes out to the people of Ukraine and especially to our academic partners. We are very concerned about the lives and the well-being of Ukrainian academics and students. The German universities will assist them within the scope of their capabilities. It is also foreseeable that these developments will cause serious damage to German-Russian academic relations. We will have to examine the relevant consequences in detail.”

The HRK will explore the possibilities for continuing and shaping university and academic relations with Ukraine and Russia in cooperation with the German academic organisations – in particular with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) – and in consultation with the Federal Government.

The war is also hitting Germany’s and Ukraine’s links in higher education: Ukraine is an important country of origin among international students in Germany. In the summer semester of 2021, more than 8,200 Ukrainian students were studying at German universities (source: Federal Statistical Office). The universities of both countries are also linked institutionally in many ways: there are currently 257 partnerships with Ukraine involving 113 German and 89 Ukrainian higher education institutions (www.internationale-hochschulkooperationen.de).
