New processes for the large-scale production of metallic bipolar plates

Abstract:
Bipolar plates (BPP) form the main mechanical structure of a fuel cell stack, which converts hydrogen by reacting with oxygen from the air into electricity, heat and water. The functionality of new types of automotive metallic BPP has already been demonstrated by individual users on the basis of components manufactured in small series, while the feasibility at the level of large series production is still pending. A particular challenge is the lack of appropriate inline measurement and testing methods that allow requirements for a robust and error-free manufacturing process to be defined and implemented. For this reason, the research project HZwo:FRAME - Large Series Bipolar Plate is concerned with research and functional verification of new manufacturing processes that enable large-scale production. It is important to link the individual production steps to an economical production chain and to convert them into an efficient system. Based on the manufacturing conditions defined by the processes used, a specially adapted bipolar plate is developed that meets the OEM requirements and is implemented in the form of a research function model using the processes investigated in the project. With its research activities, the project contributes to the expansion of the high-tech and scientific location for fuel cells and advanced powertrains in Saxony.

 

Motivation:

  • There are currently very high production and material costs for the manufacturing of BPP
  • Lack of efficient process chains for BPP production
  • Consolidtation of Saxony as an industrial location through the establishment of new key technologies

Goals:

  • Research into production processes of metallic BPP that are suitable for large-scale production and can be integrated within a process chain
  • Constructive design of the BPP geometries and experimental implementation of functional models, taking into account new manufacturing processes and handling within the process chain
  • Research and establishment of quality assurance measures along the entire value chain
