Doing a doctorate at the Faculty of Humanities

Your doctorate is – the first qualification step towards an academic career after successfully completing a university degree (usually a Master's degree) –. As a doctoral student (and postdoc), you also make a significant contribution to the further development of scientific knowledge in your subject. In addition, you will gain qualifications that demonstrate your high level of academic expertise for careers outside academia.

The Faculty of Humanities takes into account the diversity of career paths as well as the scientific policy requirements for the quality assurance of doctorates (in particular the recommendations of the DFG, the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Rectors' Conference).
For this reason, in addition to the conventional route, the individual doctorate, in which you look for a supervisor and work on the topic of your choice, either as a member of staff at the respective chair or independently outside the university, the Faculty of Humanities also offers the structured doctorate (e.g. doctoral programmes or graduate programmes). structured doctorate (e.g. doctoral study programmes or research training groups).
The following applies to both forms of doctorate:

  • The professional aptitude of potential doctoral candidates as well as arguments relating to equal opportunities and internationality are transparent criteria for access to doctoral studies.
  • The offerings for a specialist qualification programme are more strongly integrated. You will have access to subject-specific and interdisciplinary courses and events in which you can acquire additional qualifications.

Doctoral and supervision agreements are an essential element.
