What you need to do after arriving in Chemnitz

We are pleased to welcome you as visiting scholar at Chemnitz University of Technology! After your arrival in Chemnitz there are still some formalities to be completed. Please find in the following a compilation of the most important information for you.

In order to be able to conduct your research at our university as a visiting scholar and receive your grant, we need the signed Contract with a Visiting Researcher. Together with your host professorship, you have already prepared the conclusion of this agreement before your arrival.

As soon as you have arrived in Chemnitz, the hosting professorship will ask for your signature to the Contract with a Visiting Researcher.

In order to move into your apartment in Chemnitz, you have to conclude a rental agreement with your landlord. Please discuss with your landlord how water, heating and electricity costs will be settled.

Before signing the rental agreement, please also check that everything is in order in your new apartment. Any defects should be discussed immediately with your landlord.

We recommend that you conclude the rental agreement directly for the duration of your stay in Chemnitz. So you do not have to cancel the contract separately.

Since you will stay at least 3 months in Chemnitz in the Visiting Scholar Program, you must register your residence with the City of Chemnitz. Your registration must be made within 14 days after your arrival.

Registration is very simple:

  • During opening hours, please go to one of the Citizen Service Points of the City of Chemnitz. We recommend the one at Düsseldorfer Platz 1 directly in the city center.
  • Please take your passport, tenancy agreement and the confirmation of the landlord with you.
  • The person in charge at the Citizen Service Points collects all data together with you and processes your application directly on site. A signature is required from you.
  • You will receive your registration certificate directly.

There are no costs for the registration of your residence.

Citizens of the European Union (EU) and EEA countries as well as all visiting scholars with a D-visa for the entire period of stay can skip this step.

All other visiting scholars please note our detailed information on Entry, visa and residence permit.

Citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America should not commence research in Chemnitz until the residence permit has been issued.

Please note that the costs for issuing the residence permit are to be borne by you.

Your most important contact is the Immigration Office of the City of Chemnitz.

We recommend that you open a bank account in Germany, e.g. to have the rent debited. The banks and savings banks offer different account models, which are also connected with different costs.

To open a bank account you will need some documents, but these may vary from bank to bank. However, as a rule you must present the following documents:

  • your passport,
  • the registration certificate you received when registering your residence at the Citizen Service Point.

Deutsche Bank in Chemnitz is one of the cooperation partners of Chemnitz University of Technology. For opening an account you can make an appointment.

Commerzbank AG in Chemnitz is also one of our cooperation partners.

We will be delighted to accompany you to your appointment at the bank in order to provide you with linguistic support.

In addition to finding accommodation, it is also essential to conclude an electricity contract for any accommodation. Please look for an appropriate electricity provider, your landlord can advise you if necessary.

The following should be noted:
All private flats in Germany are basically legally entitled to an automatic basic supply. This is ensured in Chemnitz by the provider Eins Energie in Saxony. If this is not desired, it must be terminated as soon as possible. In addition, you should check whether an electricity contract is not already included for furnished flats.

The public radio and television stations in Germany are financed by the so-called license fee for radio and tv. There is a legal obligation to contribute to this system. This means that a flat-rate license fee is levied for each apartment. Currently, the monthly contribution is 18.36 euros. The contributions are always paid bundled for 3 months.

Once you have registered your residence and opened a bank account, please register with the Contribution Service. This may be done easily online.

Further information on the amount and use of the license fee can be found directly at the Contribution Service’s website.

Your most important contact is the Contribution Service via its various contact options.

Nationals of EU member states and EEA states who have received the S1 form from their local health insurance fund should register with a German statutory health insurance fund.

All other visiting scholars please ask their health insurance company, through which they are insured in Germany, which further steps are necessary.

Once you have concluded your Contract with a Visiting Researcher, the Human Resources Department will arrange for you to have access to our university's IT infrastructure.

Your most important contact for receiving your login data is the user service of the University Computer Center.

Our Human Resources Department will also arrange access to the library once you have concluded your Contract with a Visiting Researcher.

To register in the library, you will need the following documents:

  • your passport
  • the registration certificate you received when registering your residence at the Citizen Service Point

Your most important contact for obtaining your library card is the service team of the University Library.
