02.05.1836  Establishment of the Royal Industrial School Chemnitz (14 students); education is taught in three major subjects: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agriculture
09.10.1862 Change of designation to Royal Higher Industrial School (187 students); to the school network belong additionally the Industrial Design School including 33 students, the School for Civil Engineering including 84 students and the Craftsmen School including 55 students
11.06.1878  The school network consisting on the Higher Industrial School, the School for Civil Engineering, the Craftsmen School and the School for Industrial Design is merged under the designation State Technical School; the Higher Industrial School is complemented by a Department for Civil Engineering
Winter term 1882  Beginning of teaching in Electrical Engineering; in the following time, the number of students surpasses 1.000 for the first time 
06.04.1892 Establishment of a Department for Electrical Engineering at the Higher Industrial School and at the Craftsmen School
05.05.1900  In order to emphasize the special position between technical secondary schools and universities, the Higher Industrial School is awarded the designation Royal Industrial Academy 
Easter 1912  Establishment of a Department for Industrial Education (closed subsequent to winter term 1935/36)
12.04.1929 Change of designation to State Academy of Technology; the Academy consists now on five departments: for Mechanical Engineering, for Chemical and Textile-chemical Engineering, for Architecture and Civil Engineering, for Electrical Engineering and for Textile Engineering 
24.02.1945 Closure of the Academy due to damages after air raid over Chemnitz
03.12.1945  Re-opening of the Academy but closure again on 06.12.1945
09.04.1947  Re-opening as vocational school with the designation Polytechnic School Chemnitz including 466 students; the school network meanwhile consists on the engineering resp. vocational schools for Mechanical Engineering (173 students), for Chemistry (32 students), for Urban and Industrial Civil Engineering (187 students) and for Electrical Engineering (74 students)
March 1952  Change of designation of the Polytechnic School to School for Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, in September 1952 to School for Heavy Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering (1.226 students); Closure of the School in August 1955; the School for Chemistry was relocated at the School of Köthen, the School for Civil Engineering at the School of Görlitz
08.10.1953 Beginning of teaching at the University for Mechanical Engineering established in the building of the ancient Polytechnic School initiated by an industrial internship of one term (291 students)
01.04.1955 Establishment of a Workers and Farmers Faculty as 4th faculty of the University for Mechanical Engineering in addition to the Faculties for Mathematics and Sciences, for Mechanical Engineering and for Technology  
09.10.1963 Award of the status University of Technology (1.525 students and 460 extra-occupational students. Higher education is taught at the Faculties for Mathematics and Sciences, for Mechanical Engineering and for Technology as well as, from 1965 on, at the additionally established Faculty for Electrical Engineering
10.09.1968 iIn implementation of the 3rd Higher Education Reform establishment of the Scientific Council as well as the Colleges for Social Sciences, for Mathematics and Sciences, for Engineering and for Electrical Engineering as advisory bodies; the Institutes were merged into the new structural units, the sections
14.11.1986 Award of the status general educating University of Technology (ca. 8.000 students)

1990 Initiation of the Higher Education Renewal Process
01.10.1992 Integration of the former University for Education Zwickau and change of designation to University of Technology Chemnitz-Zwickau
15.11.1993 Establishment of a Faculty of Economics and Business Administration
24.01.1994 Establishment of a Faculty for Humanities
25.06.1997 Renaming to Chemnitz University of Technology – the university site at Zwickau meanwhile had been abandoned; the university consisted on the Faculties for Sciences, for Mathematics, for Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering, for Computer Sciences, for Economics as well as for Humanities (5.200 students)
September 1997 Termination of the education of primary school teachers and, from winter term 1999/2000 on, no more enrolment of students in the degree programs for teachers (concentration of teacher higher education at the University of Leipzig and the Technical University of Dresden)
July 2003 Signing of the “Higher Education Contract” by the Free State of Saxony and the Saxon universities
01.01.2009 Coming into force of the new Saxon Higher Education Act
01.11.2009 Establishment of an 8th faculty– Faculty for Behavioral and Social Sciences
02.05.2011 Opening of the festival week in celebration of the 175th Anniversary of the Royal Industrial School Chemnitz
01.11.2012 The Cluster of Excellence “MERGE – Technologies for Multifunctional Lightweight Structures” officially commenced operation and was established as Central Institution of Chemnitz University of Technology. The cluster was funded by 34 million Euro for a period of five years within the Federal and States Excellence Initiative
01.10.2013 Establishment of a Center for Teacher Training as Central Institution for the education of teachers for primary schools
01.06.2014 Establishment of a Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer as Central Institution of Chemnitz University of Technology
seit 03/2020 Significantly limited operation of Chemnitz University of Technology due to preventive measures against the spreading of the Corona-pandemic
07.08.2020 Establishment of the Central Institution MAIN (Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes)
01.10.2020 Opening of the new Central Library in the building Alte Aktienspinnerei, Straße der Nationen 33
