Chemnitz University of Technology raises rainbow flags and colors logo for Christopher Street Day

On Christopher Street Day Chemnitz 2021, Chemnitz University of Technology raises the rainbow flag on all its flagpoles, dyes its logo in rainbow colors, and thus again sets a sign for tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism.

On the occasion of Chemnitz Christopher Street Day (CSD) on July 31, 2021, the rainbow flag will be hoisted on all eleven flagpoles at Chemnitz University of Technology. In addition, Chemnitz University of Technology will dye its logo in rainbow colors - as it did during its rainbow logo campaign on the occasion of the European Football Championship match between Germany and Hungary. With this, Chemnitz University of Technology continues its campaign #wirsindchemnitz and once again sets a clear signal: "Chemnitz University of Technology shows its colors with its rainbow flags and rainbow logo (German article) in the truest sense of the word - against discrimination as well as for tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. The commitment of the Senate and President’s Office at Chemnitz University of Technology to cosmopolitanism, tolerance, and diversity - which is an integral part of the community of values of Chemnitz University of Technology, which we consistently live internally and which we confidently carry externally - also stands for this," says Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, President of Chemnitz University of Technology. "Science thrives on the exchange of ideas," adds the Vice President for Academic and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, "and there must be no limits to this exchange."

In recent years, Chemnitz University of Technology has made numerous efforts to live diversity. This is exemplified, for example, by the regulations for protection against and dealing with discrimination and sexualized violence at Chemnitz University of Technology (anti-discrimination regulations), the receipt of the rating "Equality Excellent!" (German article) as one of ten universities in Germany and the only university in the Free State of Saxony, as well as the installation of gender-neutral toilets on all parts of the campus.

"Chemnitz University of Technology as an educational and research institution offers a home to people from all over the world and welcomes them warmly, regardless of where they come from, what religion they belong to, what sexual orientation they have, or what form of coexistence they choose.

Based on this conviction, we desire a climate that is open to the world and characterized by acceptance, not only on the university campus but also beyond. Therefore, we strongly oppose statements and actions that contradict this concern, especially racist, right-wing extremist or even openly radical right-wing positions. We emphatically call on all those in politics, business, society, and culture who are in a position of responsibility to continue to fight for an open and discrimination-free society and to stand up for the fundamental values of a free, democratic, and open society!"

Christopher Street Day (CSD) is a day of celebration, commemoration, and demonstration by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. On this day, demonstrations are held for the rights of these groups and against discrimination and exclusion. CSD commemorates the first known uprising of homosexuals and other sexual minorities against police arbitrariness on New York's Christopher Street in the Greenwich Village neighborhood on June 28, 1969. In Germany, CSD demonstrations do not take place exactly on the historic date, but on weekends from June to August. (Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Street_Day)
