247 New Dormitory Rooms with Micro Bath
The dormitory at Vettersstraße 66 was reopened after extensive interior renovation - There are still rooms available for the winter semester 2020/2021
After a construction period of about one and a half years, the students at Chemnitz University of Technology can now move back into the dormitory at Vettersstraße 66. The renovated building mainly offers fully furnished single rooms with private bathrooms. The 247 new tenants now also have access to WLAN in the building. The renovation, which was completely financed by the Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau, cost around 6.25 million euros.
Apartments with own bathroom
The dormitory dates back to the 1970s and has only been renovated in individual areas in the past. A thorough renovation was absolutely necessary here. In October 2018, the entire house was emptied and the craftsmen moved in. All sanitary and electrical installations were renewed and each apartment was equipped with its own bathroom to meet the special requirements. "We have developed a complete bathroom for small space requirements, which is visually attractive and has functional fittings. Because of its size we call it a micro-bathroom. We have already tested this bathroom for two years in another dormitory and it was well received. The motto is 'Klein aber mein!' (‘Small, but mine’),” says Dirk Päßler, head of the living/technology department at the Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau. In addition, the microwave, refrigerator and two hotplates now make each room a small independent unit.
Common rooms on every floor
The construction work was completed in the summer semester of 2020. A total of 36 companies were involved. In the 247 rooms, 2,300 m² of wall tiles and 12.5 km of electrical cable had to be laid and 13,700 m² of wall surface had to be painted. The common rooms on each corridor were also redesigned so that the residents can communicate with each other. Especially during the Corona-related online lectures at Chemnitz University of Technology and the exam preparation period, these rooms were highly appreciated and used for joint learning with the necessary safety distance. "Anyone who wants to have their peace and quiet can also get their peace and quiet. And anyone who would like to get to know other people has plenty of opportunities with us," adds Päßler.
Fitness room exclusively for "ladies
A highlight in the freshly renovated dormitory is the fitness room exclusively for ladies. It can be used by every tenant of the Studentenwerk. The fitness rooms in the neighbouring dormitories are available for men. But the dormitories offer much more: free billiards and table tennis rooms, reading cafés, music rehearsal rooms, and a caretaker service. All of this is included in the all-inclusive rental price starting at 246 euros for the dormitory at Vettersstraße 66, as well as all incidental rental costs and Internet.
For the start of the coming winter semester, there are still free rooms available for which students, trainees, and other interested parties can apply at www.swcz.de/wohnen.
The Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau is co-financed by taxes based on the budget passed by the Saxon state parliament.
