Academic background

Dr. Benjamin Höhne will represent the W3 professorship Comparative European Governance Systems at Chemnitz University of Technology from the summer semester 2024. In the summer semester 2023, he was interim professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Münster. In between, he was university coordinator for a Europeanization project at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. His research interests include topics of comparative government, in particular political parties, populism, representation, East Germany and the political field of security policy.

Höhne has taught political science at the University of Trier, University of Potsdam, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, FU Berlin and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. Between 2016 and 2022, he was deputy director of the Institute for Parliamentarism Research. He was also a research group leader there. In the summer semester 2022, he was a DAAD Research Fellow at the American-German Institute (AGI) at Johns Hopkins University. In Washington D.C., he conducted research on right-wing parliamentary rhetoric in the German Bundestag and the US House of Representatives.

Höhne is speaker for the Working Group on Party Research of the German Political Science Association. His dissertation on the recruitment of Members of the European Parliament was awarded the Science Prize of the German Bundestag in 2015. Höhne works as an academic political advisor, including as an expert for parliaments (state parliaments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Thuringia), ministries (Planning Office of the Federal Ministry of Defense, Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe and Equality) and institutions for political education (Federal Agency for Civic Education, party-affiliated foundations). He is also involved in civil society initiatives for better representation of women (including #ParitätJetzt! around former Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth) and East Germans.
