VELL Equipment
OptiTrack Motion Tracking
VELL features an OptiTrack marker-based motion tracking system consisting of eight Prime 13 cameras mounted on a 3 m × 5 m truss structure. The system enables precise tracking of users within the capture volume and supports the live animation of VR avatars using Unity. OptiTrack motion capture suits, in different sizes, are available to allow fast and reliable attachment of reflective markers to the user.
Extended Reality Technologies
To experience VR environments and XR applications, VELL relies on a range of head-mounted displays (HMDs).
VR HMDs:
- HTC Vive
- HTC Vive Pro
AR/XR HMDs:
- Meta Quest 3
- Microsoft HoloLens
VR Interfaces:
- Cyberith Virtualizer (1st version)
- Custom Cycling Simulator
Psychophysiological Measurement Devices
The Psychophysiological Measurement Lab at VELL is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for conducting user studies. In particular:
-
Stationary Eye Tracker: SR Research EyeLink 1000 Plus, enabling high-precision measurement of eye movements.
-
Mobile EEG/EXG System: ANT Neuro 64 Sports Pro, capable of recording brain activity using 64-channel gel caps, as well as additional biosignals such as electrocardiography (ECG), electrodermal activity (EDA), and electromyography (EMG).
VELL FabLab
The Fabrication Lab at VELL is designed to provide students and researchers with access to rapid prototyping technologies. It features a Windows workstation for CAD modeling, a 3D scanner (Creality CR-Scan 01), a 3D printer (Bambu Lab A1), a laser cutter/engraver (xTool S1 40W), and an electronics assembly corner equipped with a soldering station, tools, and consumables.
Robotics and teleoperation
VELL is also equipped with robotics technology to support user studies, particularly in areas such as interaction design for teleoperation, as well as teaching activities. A mobile robotic platform is available, featuring a six-degrees-of-freedom manipulator, an RGB-D sensor camera, and a LiDAR system (LoCoBot WidowX-250 6 DOF on a Create® 3 base). For teaching and workshops, six LEGO® Eduction Spike Prime kits and related extension sets are also available.
Computer Resources
To support workshops, hands-on sessions, and student project work, VELL provides a dedicated room equipped with nine 27” Apple iMacs. In addition, four Windows workstations for XR development and five gaming laptops capable of supporting the development and execution of smaller projects are available.
