Experimental Methods of Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics
Content
The experimental fluid mechanics as a key technology is the measurement at the process, where the procedures interacting in a system transform, transport or store matter, energy or information. Basic and practical skills in experimental investigations of flowing fluids and the use of classical and modern flow measurement techniques are taught.
The lecture deals among others with the following topics: Basic concepts, substance sizing, pressure, flow and flow velocity measurement of fluid flows as well as drop size measurement of sprays.
The content of the lecture is deepened by an accompanying practical course in which experiments for the measurement of fluid parameters (density, viscosity, surface tension), pressure, flow rate and flow velocity of fluid flows are realized.
- Basics and error analysis
- Pressure Measurement
- Speed and Flow Measurement
- Temperature Measurement
- Density Measurement
- Measurement of the speed of sound and caloric values
Teaching Plan
The course and practical training take place in every summer semester. The lectures and practical trainings are organized in:
- Lecture: 2 hours per week in the semester
- Exercise: an hour per week in the semester
- Practical Training: an hour per week in the semester

Experimental Methods of Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics
Mastery Goals
The student acquires knowledge about measurement techniques in fluid dynamics and thermodynamics and is enabled to select suitable measurement principles and measurement methods based on the requirements of a measurement task. According to the individual advantages and disadvantages, the student can evaluate the specific measurement methods and apply the most suitable method. The acquired knowledge about the causes, the avoidance as well as the treatment of measurement errors enables the student to recognize and eliminate possible sources of error in early stages of measurements. At the same time, the student is able to quantify existing measurement deviations by applying the error calculation or estimation.
Admission Requirements
None, but basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics is recommended.
Exams
The course is considered passed if the participation in the oral final examination was successful. The admission requirement for the oral examination is the successful participation in the practical training.
According to the current situation, the courses (face-to-face events) will start in May at the earliest. Until then the scipts and chapters of the courses, which can be found in the menue item Courses, can be used for self-study.
Type of Course | Day | Time | Place | Calendar Week |
---|---|---|---|---|
Lecture | Wednesday | 11:30 - 13:00 | 2/W034 (C25.034) | weekly |
Exercise | Thursday | 11:30 - 13:00 | 2/W043 (C25.043) | odd CV |
